cleaning 304 stainless steel

Anybody recommend a good way/product to clean 304 stainless steel and bring it back to its mirror finish without degrading it?

taken from http://www.englishcustompolishing.co...stainless.html

One of the greatest risks when working with materials this tough is over heating. Over heating will not only warp your item, but if it is tempered you will break down the tempering and soften the surface. If your work piece is stainless steel you may cause it to release many of its oxides and carbon. Then it won't be stainless any more and will rust like ordinary steel.

If you have a finished product that you are trying to maintain a mirror finish on, at least 95% of hand polishes are a big no, no. Most of them will do no more than clean the surface at best, and at worst they will make it hazy by leaving light scratches in the finish. This is because they cut a little and loose their edge in rapid fashion.

What specifically are you trying to clean (what kind of object is it)? Is it an already mirror finished 304 #8 steel that has lost its shine?

Ive heard that about 95% of hand applied polishes are actually bad for 304 ss, but I dont know what the good brands are.

Also found this page on some consumer products for ss exhaust care. http://www.staintune.com.au/product_care.htm

Id recommend machine polishing/buffing because ss mirror finishes require heat treatment to restore.

I'm trying to clean up a cobb exhaust to make it shiney again. but like you said, I've read about how most of the hand applied metal polishes work great, just not for 304 SS. Something about how applying the metal polish on it washes away this protective film that is applied when the 304 SS is made.

I was actually viewing that site myself a while ago lol

side note-i took pics of your pedal assembly but i have no clue where the camera went...lol. pics will come a lil later. sorry!

Are you familiar with any method of machine polishing/buffing at all? If so, then go at it. That method has better heat treatment than any arm and pad can do. Also its possible that the protective film is long gone now since the metal started to get passive on the outer most layer. If I find out what that protective film is Ill let you know, Im sure you can purchase it and apply it as a spray on or wipe on because it sounds like it could be something in liquid form, I can be totally wrong.

-as for the pedals... you lost the camera? haha classic

It doesn't hard the surface or anything and make it just regular steel instead of stainless?

How would I electro-polish? It seems very costly...unless you can help me out at your work =)
