Still, I've had nothing but good experiences with CHP. They are pros in my opinion.
I've seen / heard of a lot more BS with local police.

CHP has given me tickets for going with the flow of traffic.

So regardless of what people say, I am bitter.
i am not too fond of SJPD. however i'm fond of the laziness of the officer that failed to file a statement after my written declaration, thereby making me avoid 2 points on my license and get my 300 something odd dollars back.

The federal funding for the homeland "security" duties do not cover the actual cost of providing those services. The CHP was *****ing about this most of 2002 and 2003. My point was, if your numbers are right, $1B of revenue for tickets is significant, and is close enough to the entire budget of the CHP. The money does not show up in their pay checks, but you can bet your *** that the revenue is one hell of a reason for them to be *****es about writing tickets.

Don't give it another thought. Welcome to BAIC! Next week it will be an entirely different drama.

Cops here in san jose, for the most part are chicken ***** and wont stand up for them selves.
Another post just recently about cops in fremont not coming to fill out a report when someones car is broken in to.
You *do* need to step off and stay of your soap box cause you don't have a freakin clue what cops are like in CA.
Some are nice, but most are ******. I commute hwy-17 (very curvy highway, most people are scurred) every day for work, and I have seen many times where there is an accident where they need assistance, and no more then a minute away is ALWAYS a CHP giving someone a ticket for driving too fast. I don't see how that helps at all, that is not serving, or protecting people IMHO.

so, I say F**K the police, and you too if you think cops are 'just doing there job' all the time.

You just made a point for me. Did you ever think that the people who got in the accident were, I dont know driving too fast. :wiggle: Look man, I didn't write in the general forums (where this was posted originally and moved to the San Fran forums by one of the moderators) to pick a fight. You're right I dont know how cops are in CA. I was just curious reading DRNORM's post and saw the line about cops catching "real" criminals. Just strikes a nerve.
You are entitled to your opinion, and your assumptions about cops. I never said that cops are doing their jobs "all the time" Some are ****** youre right. If you would have read the entire post you would have seen that I do agree a lot of cops let the power get to their heads. My point was that if you do something illegal, and get caught, dont get pissed at the cop. You commit a crime, technically you are a criminal. Giving citations is part of our job, just like like grocery clerk stocks groceries. The difference is the groceries dont swear at you and tell you that you are useless. And my other favorite line, "you are nothing without that badge and gun."

I dont know you from Adam, but dont assume to act like you know me enough to say "F**K you" to me just because of what I do. You a probably a great guy but cursing at someone you may think you sound smart, but to everyone else in here you just sound like friggin jackass. So for your "F**K you" my response when I hear that is, "Drive safe."

DRNORM don't worry I was not pi$$ed at you, I just am so sick of hearing that line. Use one like "bad cop, no donut!"

certainly a touchy topic.
I have a lot of respect for (most) cops. As I said, I have quite a few friends that are cops and work with law enforcement individuals fairly often.

I phrased this question the way I did b/c I figured "CHP" would get attention. What I reallywant to know (which I think I made clear in my multiple posts, explainations, apologies and replies) is how o/w "decent" citizens are treated whose only "walk on the wild side" is a little auto-improvement. I mentioned I got a speeding ticket. I WAS speeding- though I thought it was a cheap shot and it was clearly a speed trap. It was my first moving violation in 15+ years (not all of which was spent driving below the speed limit).

In Kona (where I have lived for the past 9 yrs), vehicle laws are pretty much ignored. You can probably get away w/ any mod you want and never get hassled (unless you do something- like speed or drive drunk or race- to draw attention to yourself). Cops DO NOT go looking for violations.

From many of the posts, it seems like police (CHP and/or local) have very little tolerance for "illegal" mods (exhausts, suspension, possibly bodywork). There have been posts where people make it sound like they were just "hangin' out" (perhaps w/ a group of other car afficionados) and got hassled. Comments were made about cops looking at engines and such.

Since I am NOT (generally) a criminal and I don't consider making some performance improvments to my car a "crime" (though they may be considered "technically" illegal b/c they violate a vehicle code in a book- but certainly do not HARM society), I wanted to know if I was entering an environment (CA) where making "technically" illegal mods (like PIAA bulbs which may say "off road use only") would be sought out and punished, causing me to be treated as a criminal. Some places are very uptight and some places are very poor ($$ is $$, whichever budget it goes into).

There IS a difference between someone who is driving recklessly and a danger to himself and others vs. someone who has made some mechanical changes to his car (or removed a front license plate or added an aftermarket horn, for example).
Sure, illegal is illegal, but some cultures either tolerate or ignore non-safety related mods whereas others (CA?) have zero tolerance and perhaps even seek out violations even when they are not really bothering anyone else.

Obviously, it varies from individual officer to individual, how you look and how you treat the officer. For my ticket in Redding, the local cop manning the speed trap was "all business". I said "Good morning", all he said was, "License and registration". He wasn't interested in why I is was speeding, where I was going or if there were extenuating circumstances. Turns out (from speaking w/ workmates who knew him) that he was considered a "dick" who wouldn't even give his mother a warning. It was their ticket factory and they were there to write tickets. I can respect that (though it still was a BS, sneaky thing that really wasn't a safety issue). If he'd been a nice guy I wouldn't have been any happier, but there's a big difference (in my mind) between driving very safely (though above an unreasonably low speed limit) and racing down a twisty mtn. road, swerving in and out of traffic.

Some people clearly get hassled a lot more (e.g., young, cocky, obnoxious or track slicks and a racing # on the door). I was wanted to know if people "minding their own business' still had to worry about cops in CA going out of there way to find violations they could ticket.

Sorry man, I was really grumpy the other morning when I wrote that.
But I still say "bad cop! NO DONUT!" Just my opinion though.
The only cool cops I have met are the santa cruz county sherriffs, yes some are jerks but most are really nice guys/ladies. Other then them, I met one guy who is on clubwrx at last years Mt. Hamilton meet. Has a Sedona red bugeye with no cats.

And the accidents on 17 are sometimes from speed, but mostly just because people dont know how to drive, over/under correct when its not needed, tap another car or center devide, hand at 12-oclock on wheel, air bag goes off, and punches one self in head with own arm.

I beleive in safe driving as well, but IMHO 5-10MPH over the speed limit is safe within reason under certain conditions. Sometimes people make honest mistakes when driving. We drive cars as a utility and convenience in our daily lives, we are not even educated when we get our drivers license of all the laws there are. And some we forget. I agree that officers of the law are there to enforce it and keep people in line. But I think that a lot of them abuse their privileges and make bad judgements at times.

Sorry again for being snappy, I am bitter. ;x

^^^No worries Bro. Trust me I hate stupid cops way more than you do, because it makes my job tougher. And it makes good people lose respect for good officers. Take care.

that's because it's a non violent crime.

same thing when a-holes ripped off my badges off my old wrx.

i waited ... and waited... and waited for fremont pd.

finally i called after like 5 hours of waiting and was told that due to the nature of the crime, my statement will be taken over the phone...

on one side, i do agree with that.

on the other hand, i am still pissed over it.

dont want to get involved with drama here, but the chp IMO are dicks. I have a court date coming up for goin 70mph on 880 in fremont at 3:30 am(65mph speed limit). And in Los Altos I got a ticket for goin 28 mph in a 25mph limit (fremont ave). Although cops are just doin there job, sometimes it gets a little ridiculous how they abuse there power.
