I'd gladly pay a few-several thousands of dollars to have an extended 4-5 years with my dog.
My dog isn't just a dog to me, he's part of my family and is treated just as such. He's super loyal, veeeeerry obedient, will follow you everywhere you go and stays by your side regadless of what the situation is, is always there for you even when no one else is, knows over 20 voice commands and many non verbal ones too (body language). He's really smart, maybe too smart for his own good... lol
But yeah, if I knew my dog had 4 years left in his life, I'd gladly pay 6k or whatever to fix him up so that he can live to be and old man.
My old dog lived to be 18 years old, he was a black and white pure breed cocker spaniel that we took off the hands of a family that wanted to get rid of him (have him put down) because they got another dog and didn't like their old dog anymore and it was too much to have both (Those bastards!!!)... We adopted him when he was about 8 years old, and he didn't change a bit from when he was 8 to 18... Always had good energy, always acted the same, when his day finally came, he died of a stroke. (which left him half paralyzed and he couldn't function mentally anymore, so we had no choice but to put him down. Saddest day of my life thus far. That was the first time I had ever lost a pet (he was the first dog we were allowed to have), and since we're such dog fanatics, his passing hit us all very hard, esepcially me and my sister since he was like our little bro. Damn, just talking about it makes me want to crawl into a hole and die my hair.
Our current dog is a Mini Pinscher who was rescued from the pound when he was aboout 8 weeks old. He was TINY, but the biggest of the litter (whole litter was at the pound, they were taken from a drug house that the cops raided, they were dog breeding to make money as well).... Much larger then his two sisters, and is now a really tall pinscher, much larger then the ones you normally see which is awesome cuz he's the perfect size for us right now (not too small, and not too big).
BTW, I know some people hate small dogs because most of them are yapping lap dogs who do nothing but bark and do annoying things, but my guy is nothing like a small dog... He was actually raised by Chopper (dog in the original post)) and his big sister Coco, so he thinks he's a big dog in terms of getting dirty, running outside and playing rough, but he's small... So when people meet him they fall in love with him cuz he's so cool, all thanks to his mentors, Chopper and Coco.
Here's a cool pic of Coco and Chopper:

Coco:
(She is half Whippet and half Pit Bull, so she can run REALLY friggin fast, and is super strong from her pit bull side. She's a SUPER healthy dog and has always been healthy, she's proof that the specific mix is a really damn good one

Chopper:
(America Bulldog)

And my guy playing rough with me, looks like he's biting down hard, but he's not, he just holds your hand gently when playing, he's 100% Mini Pinscher, and like all the dogs in our family, he's from the pound.
(Notice the glock tin pin up thing in the back? That was not planned! )
