Not really. Cost-cutting usually starts in infrastructure and marketing. There's not much to be saved by changing the forumlation process. They need to sell all of the petroleum products they refine, so how the components get mixed and matched doesn't affect things too much. Regular and premium gas actually cost the same to produce, the price difference comes mostly from economics. Nobody would buy regular if premium cost the same, and then there wouldn't be enough premium to go around, so the price would go up.
yes but does this mean all 76 gas stations will become chevron gas stations and use techron additives or keep the 76 stations under the same name and continue to use the pro-power additive thingamajig that 76 uses?
They are first going to start with Unocal layoffs as cost cutting measures.

I'd be suprised if the feds allow this merger to go through in the intrest of the anti-trust act. The amount of the domestic market that both Unocal and Chevron hold, if one were to purchase the other, would considerably shift the balance of fair competion. We're talking some major, major money here.

Uh which country do you live in? I don't think the Republican congress gives a rat's a$$ about any "anti-trust act".
Watch and see- this is going through without a hitch- I would bet money on it.

Most likely it's going to stay the same. Why wouldn't it? Frankly, I've never noticed a change in my car's performance if I used Shell, Chevron or 76.... maybe that's just me. But why would they go all out as to change the formula? They might as well change the name 76 to Chevron if they're going to merge... it'll save them more money that way.

hmmmmm.....wonder if my shares in chevron are gonna go up.
Well...I use my chevron card 70% of the time anyways.
sireatalot. There are many reason why companies that take over other companies let them keep their names...at least for a while. One major one is customer regognition.
Take for example SBC. When they bought Pacbell they let them keep their name for some time. Why...cause nobody know who the crap SBC is or what it means. Overtime they started adding their logo in with pacbell....like pacific bell/SBC. etc. Then no more Pacbell. It's start all over again with AT&T if that finishes going through...but it might actually be AT&T everywhere an no more SBC. even though SBC is the buyer.
Basically there are people loyal to 76 and people loyal to chevron...nearly as passionately as american cars to imports. It's madness. But it's there. If they go changing things around they'll loose people to other companies. I'd expect them to leave it. Just move things around.
Like they did with Texaco.

CRAP....damn it. I think they're paying too much as well. But it will pay off in the long run. One less competitor and it's one with great name recognition.
I bet unacals went up. Bastards.
