Without checking the code, there is no way of knowing whats wrong with it. Ive never heard/seen a working radiator cap pop a CEL.

Ive heard that Pepboys or Kragen will pull codes for you for free.



@CaliSuby Dont you have a protune? I would get that code looked at asap and no 100$ is not reasonable for just pulling a code. Try a $20-$45 shop if Pepboys/Kragen thing doesnt work.

Yes the easiest way to diagnose a CEL is have it scanned..most auto parts do scan for free as someone mentioned above and yes you do want to match the caps but going with a lower rating than what came with the car isnt a good idea either for it may not provide the seal the car needs.

In California, they are no longer allowed to pull codes for you. Apparently, too many people were going to Kragen, resetting CELs, and then attempting to get their Smogs done.

Since when? I have a buddy who keeps getting a random CEL on his Denali. There is no fix to be had, so he just hits up the NAPA up in Tahoe for a code reset every month or two.

This is a standing offer to all baic i-clubbers....

Ill scan your CELs for you... the software will just give you the error code. Its up to you to find out the rest...

I'm in the Fremont area so you need to bring it. Unless of course you're a hot chick...

It's true that Kragen and such places can not (or at least do not) allow people to borrow OBD-II readers to scan codes. I was told different information by employees there, but the end result is the same.

However, Aamco still does free code pulls. Since they're an actual repair shop, they can pull codes for you.

Hell yeah for AAMCO...Stopping by there today after work..went online and it says they look them up for free...will see what kind of problem the carrito has...

Actually, I do! Because, now I'm worried that the cooling system is going to get out of wack b/c I don't have matching oil caps!

Nope they charge money for their time and equipment. The guys that do it for free do it in hopes of getting your business.

Personally if you own a modded Subaru, you should pay the 50$ and get a generic scanner from Kragen/Pepboys.
