Cat Converter Monitor Not Complete

Hi Bay Area!

Help me out with SMOG if you have info about this error.

2003 WRX - passed SMOG this year in April, no issues, no codes - 6 months and about 1000 miles ago. Car is in the same shape and form, no work on it done since.

I have an uppipe and I think I might still have an electronic CEL fix from the when I had a downpipe years ago. Again, it passed at least 2 or maybe 3 annual SMOGs in this configuration, recent was only about 6 months ago.

Subaru Service Rep told me 60mhp on freeway for a couple of mins, decelerate to 40 with no braking over 30 seconds, and do that a few more times, and repeat the whole thing 2-3 times. He confirmed that Cat Monitor is super hard to set after a battery reset.

I put 300 miles on the car trying to set the sensor, but I cannot be 100% that I ever did a good deceleration to 40mph. So this is next thing planned - and night driving on 280 is probably the only option.

Any other suggestions and advise? I'm getting desperate - trying to sell the car by next week, we're moving out of area and I don't want to drive it over.

You need to check the front o2 waveform and compare it to the rear o2 waveform. You might have a deteriorating cat or an o2 sensor going bad. The best thing to do is look at Mode 6 data.

im assuming you talking about the readiness monitors that need to be "ready" to pass smog?

i put around 2-300 miles around the peninsula on my 04 trying to reset the cat/o2 sensor monitors. didnt work until after i drove to my parents place by golden gate park and back that it finally reset and all monitors were "ready"

did not do anything particular in regards to speed or time, just drove 101 up into the city and across to the richmond district on geary street haha. wish i had more advice but just keep driving it, they will reset after a while. took way longer on my wrx than my legacy
