This dude makes the guy who did super mario in 11 minutes look slow.

The mario in 11 minutes thing was fake though. The guy doing the mario thing was using an emulator and saved his game after EVERY FRAME of play. So if he messed up, he could just load from the last frame and do it again.
That doesn't look very fast at all. I used to play a LOT of tetris, and I was at least comparable on the pattern recognition side. There are a few discrepencies when compared to old-school tetris though, Let me make a few observations, please tell me if any of these are off-base.
1. The blocks are not dropping. They're either starting only at the top of the pile (maybe this is "death mode?") or he's dropping them as soon as they show up.
2. The dynamics of the block movement are different as well - it looks like you can still slide and rotate blocks after they've been dropped to the bottom of the screen. That adds a slightly different dimension to the game, one that looks faster but isn't necessarily so, because the lock/freeze rate of the blocks isn't necessarily fast (you can tell by how much time he has to manipulate blocks that don't fall into the right positions.
He's certainly a fast ****, but the way this game mode works makes it look deceivingly faster.
