Don't drink and drive and you're good.

Curious how blood tests work... I know they can breathalyze you, but take your blood? WTF?

Anyone driving in CA and arrested for DUI is required to take a chemical test, breath or blood. This is different than the breath test they give during the sobriety tests, and is done after you are arrested. You agreed to this when you got your drivers license.

All the way out 580 through 205 and a little on 5 we saw a lot of squad cars. Had a white GC jump into traffic from Grantline quickly and he didn't see the squad car and motorcycle officer behind me that had pretty much been tucked in about 2 cars back since Livermore, luckily he dropped down in speed at about BassPro Shops, thought he was gonna get a ticket for sure.

There had to be at least 1-2 patrol cars about every 5 miles with people pulled over for various reasons including one set of folks getting their pos 90's Mini-Blazer getting tossed.

Busy "Holiday" weekend, nothing me-ew. Nothing to see, move along meow.

Agreed, drinking and driving is ridiculously stupid...

So this started Jan 1st? What you're saying is I didn't sign up and agree to this when I signed up for my drivers license in 1996? I don't agree with drinking and driving, but taking someones blood seems pretty invasive... Why can't they get what they want through a sobriety test and breathalyzer? I guess perhaps it's for other illicit drugs? Not trying to be a *****, just curious about it. Do they test for other drugs when they take the blood? I know they can't really do much for testing cannabis because of it's long half-life, but what about other drugs?

The blood test is not new. And they test for only alcohol for DUI. If there is suspicion of other drugs you get to go through a whole bunch more sobriety tests, then take a blood or urine test.

We have two boxes, an alcohol box and an everything else box. Uses the same vial of blood, and you only give blood if you refuse the breathalyzer.

Ah ha, makes more sense now. I thought they breathalyzed AND took blood (for a more accurate reading?). But yeah, I can see if someone refuses to take a breathalyzer.
