CHP Targets I-80 Speeders
'Operation Zero Tolerance' In Effect Wednesday

UPDATED: 9:22 am PDT April 28, 2004
AUBURN, Calif. -- The California Highway Patrol is cracking down on speeders on a major Northern California freeway Wednesday.
Officials said the CHP will initiate "Operation Zero Tolerance" on Interstate 80 from the California coast to the Nevada/Utah state line. The Nevada Highway Patrol is also taking part.
From 6 a.m. until midnight, special teams of officers will be using radar and airplanes to catch motorists who are exceeding the speed limit. Even vehicles traveling 5 mph over the posted speed limit will be cited.
CHP officials said the purpose of the operation is to reduce the number of crashes that are caused by excessive speed.
"It's very effective in that we get people to slow down on the freeway ... that's our primary objective. In the two years our Auburn office has been involved this program, we've seen a 12 percent decrease in the number of accidents in the Auburn area on I-80," CHP spokesman Max Hartley said.
Fines range from $100 to $340.

I'm so pleased that they are so concerned about my safety that they want to take money from me for not being safe.
Of couse the guy in the carpool lane on 280 doing 55 forcing everyone to go round him was being very safe 'cos he was only doing 55

Yup, saw tons of Ponch & John's out this morning.
Motorbikes, Crown Vics, and even a White Showdow.
I was westbound at 0630 & noticed a lot of eastbound vehicles pulled over.
The marked CHP Crown Vics are sneaky in that roof just above the windscreen is painted black, so at a distance you don't see a cop in the rearviews.
Be careful out there.
