carboard speaker box
so a co-worker of mine asked the other day if we thought this would work. I told him I could see it working if you did it correctly, so he thought he would give it a try. He is going to test it tonight, ill post the results when I hear from him

I think it might work out... Of course it all depends on how much power he is going to run to the speaker. If he goes with a gnarly amp... the Speaker would have the chance to rip that box apart.
I hope he decides to weigh it... Cardboard sounds like it would be lighter than wood... and if it works that would be a great lightweight alternative for those of us that are trying to shed pounds.

I think he wants to push it and see how much it can handle. I am sure if it blows out, he can repair it with duct tape!

you might as well use wood if you go through all that work.
unless he doesnt have wood cutting tools...
It's lighter though!
But some speaker boxes are wayyyy overpriced IMO
Just make sure his license plate frame doesnt rattle!

it seems kind of dumb to me, i dont know how hefty they make the enclosures for the car audio application, but a lot of the weight of a stero system is in the 20 pounds magnet in the woofer, or the 30 pound transformers in the amp. i cant see the cabinet weighing any more than 10 pounds, and if so, make your own cab from a thinner wood. its not like your hitting the road for a world tour with this thing, it stays put, make a mock up with 1/2" sheets of ply

2. can you get a good seal around the woofer?
once you get that woofer going, the sides will start flexing. and once it starts, something's gotta give.
i have seen speaker TUBES made out of cardboard material. but these are like stiff enough, like the ones you use to make concrete forms.
i could the box going for about 10 minutes or so, of say 100 watts of power and say 90dB.
now, if that cardboard is super strong and layered 2-3 times, maybe more, it might be an interesting concept if it holds up.

I could be wrong but I don't think it'll work because that expandable foam is designed to seal pipes and whatnot that protrude through external walls of buildings and the like. It's weather proof, so that means that very little air, if any will be able to move through the foam freely. Seems as though the foam would just take up all the airspace in the box. So the 1.3 cu/ft box isn't really 1.3 cu/ft anymore with all that foam in it.
