I also make a good amount of trips to the sierras in the winter, so something with AWD would be great but not mandatory. I also considered a s2000, but I think that may be a little too impractical. If you have any other ideas for cars in the 16k range (used) that are fun to drive and reasonable to maintain, please let me know. Thanks.
my 04 STi was 10k at 110k miles, only needed regular maintenance like timing belt

Why are you looking to get rid of the bugeye, besides "for something newer"? Going from an 02 to an 05 wrx seems silly, as the 05 is nowhere near a new car and most likely you'll feel its age within weeks after the novelty wears off.

I purchased my 05 Sti back in April and I love it. I got mine for 13 with 90k. And I changed out all the fluids to redline synthetic. Did spark plugs. Recently did the timing belt. All I need now is a new clutch and I'm good for awhile.

I agree with this. What about getting your bugeye detailed and letting it feel new?

It all depends on the seller and how low they're willing to go. Also the high mileage factor.

I've been looking on craigslist everyday at work. Till I found the one I wanted. And finally got it. You just gotta look around. I've looked at two cars before I found mine. And mine was stock when I bought it. Aside from the bov and the catless up pipe I did not kno about till I put it in my catless dp. Now I'm running stage 2. Lol

Yeah, if your current ride has no issues you're taking a big risk moving to another used car. If you have the money to blow though going "Eh, I'm bored with this car." then bravo to you sir. I'm jealous.

Also, about how much more is STi insurance than WRX insurance in general?

Well that depends. Are you an experienced adult driver with no record or a 19 year old with 2 accidents and a ticket Try calling Mercury, Safeco or Progressive for quotes.

Same here, after I sold my old WRX I looked for three or four months, just searching every day. I test drove two EVO's and 2 STi's before I found the one. Be patient and a nice one will pop up.

Yeah but I've actually read that STi rates can be lower than WRX (higher price, more "mature" drivers, less accidents) but I'm not sure if this is true.

For those of you who have gone from a WRX to a STi, how have your insurance rates changed?

i think it really comes down to what you personally like...

i drove 3 subarus for 8 years and went onto BMW and EvoX... after owning the Evo for 1.5 year, sold it, and don't think I would ever go back go one. I still have the bimmer and keeping it and would consider a STi down the road if I were to pick one up new. If I am looking for a project/used car, I would consider a 3rd gen RX7 myself...

for me, insurance wasn't that big of a difference...
