can battery over charge and 'boil-over'?
So I woke up this morning and plugged in my battery from the drill to its charger but forgot to unplug it as I left the house. Do I have to worry about overcharge? Should I go home and unplug the sucker?
It's a Ryobi drill battery/charger... I am searching on http://www.ryobitools.com/ as well...
Overcharge
Overcharging a battery occurs when the battery remains on charge after it has reached full charge. Overcharging causes excess heat that can cause the plates within the cells to buckle and shed their active material. Also, the battery will react to the overcharge by producing excess hydrogen and oxygen as the water within the electrolyte breaks down. The water that is lost due to overcharging can be replaced in a non-sealed battery; in a sealed battery the water loss is permanent and will negatively effect the battery's service life.

Boil over is only a concern with unregulated chargers and lead-acid batteries, or incompatible charger/battery combinations.
Things like tools, cell phones, and all the modern battery stuff has smart charging circuitry which reduces or cuts off current when the battery is full.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

thanks Pete!
I also remember it has 3 LEDs on the charger, 1 for charging, 1 when full, and 1 for something... I guess it means the charger is smart enough to stop charging once it's full.

usually, when you charge batteries like the drill batt pak, the charger sends out like 2-5 amps.
it will charge in about 1-3 hours.
trickle charge is like less than 1 amp. an even smarter charger will go into super trickle mode where it will actually stop charging, but will still keep track of the voltage of the batt.
when it drops, it will turn on again in trickle mode until it peak outs. then it repeats the cycle.
in a perfect world, trickle mode is the best way to charge a battery since high amp modes are not too good to the battery cell. but who's willing to let a battery charge 24-48 hours?
