If you want something close to the Bay but still somewhat remote, check out China Camp (in Marin, I think). It's about 45 min north of SF, with big sites with lots of trees, nice bathrooms (coin-operated showers for the ladies!), and close access to mtn bike trails for you bikers and the bay waters for you kayakers. Only problem is, there's usually a long wait to sign up for sites, several months usually.
do you want anybody around you?
you want stores close by?

Unfortunately most campsites (good ones) are booked, and booked early for the summer months when all the kiddies are out of school. Most state parks have walk-in sites, however, that can't be reserved and are first come first serve.
Check out:
Makerricker State Park in Fort Bragg
Donner State Park in Truckee
Standish Hickey in the Redwoods
You can also go to Reserve America, whichi s what's used by all the state parks for reservations and try to find campgrounds with availability during your desired dates.

Any good suggestions on a camping spot that is CHILL with dogs? Not just allows them, but doesn't ride your *** once you're there. I've had plans for 6+ weeks to go to my fav spot up near Tahoe, but it is less than 10 miles from where the fire is burning, so I need to find a new spot.

Actually I believe the fire is on the opposite side of the Desolation Wilderness, but you're probably right, in that there are going to be better places with less smoke elsewhere this week.
If you want a camp site without a reservation this time of year you'd better plan to drive a good 4-5 hours first.
