California legal questions.

Without going to much into the back story, heres what I need to know.

When I stood before the judge in November of 2002 I was told that if I plead guilty I would get the charges reduced. Ever since it's been almost impossible to find and keep a job. I recently got a copy of my background check from yet another employer who didn't want to hire me, and I didn't get the reduced charges I was promised, I got the full charges.

I've already ordered a court transcript to find out if I'm right. If I am, what is the next step? Any one ever have this problem, or no someone who has? I need to get back to work, but no one want to hire me due to my background. Any thoughts?

Um, what kind of charges are we talking here?

Speeding, manslaughter, sex with a goat, etc?
Misdemeanor or felony?

I think you'd have to tell us what you pleaded guilty to in order for us to help you out...

Call a lawyer once you get the court transcripts. Unless one of us is a lawyer, our opinions are probably BS/conjecture.

The original charges were Grand theft and Imbezzlement.

Since I turned myself in, since I was working under managers supervision, and since I was 18 at the time it was supposed to get moved down to petty theft.

Whats really funny is my first name is Eddie. So many times I have been asked....."Hey are you related to Ponch?"

Yes, I agree with mexicanpizza. You will need an attorney to go back through the court system and rectify the error. Without an attorney, you may get the runaround because they hate to admit that the court screwed up. Even after the case is all cleared up, don't expect compensation for your attorney fees or even an apology from the courts.

All I want is to be able to go back to work. I really don't care about a "we're sorry" or anything like that. I have a wife to support, and going back to school for my ASE's has been hard enough without worrying about paying bills and all this court fooey.

EDIT: Thanks for the input everyone.

How long has it been? You can file some paperwork to get it removed from your records after 7 years, I think.

Just so you know, having any criminal record is bad these days.

A frigging misdemeanor can prevent you from having meaningful employment.

yeah, new domestic violence law requires them to haul someone in on the second call to an incident, and sometimes they take on the first call...it's called a "shall-take"
