Hehe, thank you thank you!
I think all these BS laws should be dealt with like this:
1. All cars need to pass the sniffer test. Thats it. Regardless of year, make and mods. You pass the sniffer, YOU PASS.
2. Exhust noise. At idle or any given RPM, the noise must not exceed X db. Regarless of what you drive. If you can do that with a 9" pipe sticking out of your rear window, all power to you. YOU PASS.

have to say I don't agree with you on this one Alex.
1. Cars built before there was a smog test don't have smog equipment...or have very little. How can you expect these cars to meet smog laws 20/30/40 years more up to date than they are? They are not getting a free pass...just being expected to live up to the standards they were built for.
The one part I do like is you said...you pass the sniff...you PASS. That would mean regardless of modifications...if you pass you pass. I do agree with that. I think it's stupid to fail a car because it has an aftermarket part on it even if it passes the sniffer. I mean i ran my last car with cam/cam gear/head work. Stuff they couldn't see. I was allowed like a .1 or something...I read .00000000013. I could have ran the same numbers with exhaust and what not but would have failed cause of the visual. Stupid.
2. Exhaust noise. On the motorcycle note. I think they should be allowed a certain amount of flexibility. It is really hard to see bikes. Like the sticker says...."load pipes save lives" On top of that it's a bit rediculous to expect a bike with no cats and like less than 4 feet of exhaust piping to meet the same standards as cars with 2/3 cats and 5 times the exhaust piping.
I do think they should be regulated cause some of them are just rediculous but to make it equal just doesn't make sense to me.

soggynuts.... Ahh...I see what you're saying. I read it a bit closer too. I can see how this would be beneficial in some sense. And to a point I agree with it. the late 70's cars and a lot of the 80's cars are generally a huge smog problem. I see 80's buick's and what not just puffing mad smoke. Van's. Etc. But in doing that you are telling the vette guys. And many other performance fans of the erra to meet current standards.
Personally I think they should hold each car accountable to the laws it was build for...or laws within 5-10 years of their build date. That would be a fix for this forever. As it is, most current cars are made to exceed current tests by quite a bit.
I don't like the bill as it stands.

Fight this, not because you think the WRX or STI will be a classic someday, but as a means to stop giving them more control over what we drive. Remember, this is just 1 step short of making old cars meet NEW smog standards.
Would you like to be forced to meet Prius emissions standards one day?

Why not?
If my transportation is fun and exciting to drive and the technology is there to have that and Prius level emissions then, hell yeah!
I agree with Alex's two points 100%.
Classic cars are cool and all, but just because it's old and American and brings back memories of "the good old days" to the voting majority doesn't mean there's any god-given right to skirt the emissions laws. Just because I own a 1897 Chinese Opium Pipe doesn't mean I should be allowed to smoke opium with it, just because that was the "standard" at the time it was built.
A fair test for everybody, both for emissions and noise, is what's needed. And none of that visual inspection crap, either.
As for the classic boys, well, if you love the car so much it's time to start doing what all good automotive engineers do and work on the emissions...
