Need advice

I need some really quick advice.

Tranny broke @ 70,000 miles
2002 wrx w/ vf34 running 260 atwhp (its been modded since 20,000)

The reason why I put the mileage is because it got 50,000 miles modded and driven hard 25% of the time.

I will be more careful on the next tranny but here is the question.

get the ra gear set and have it installed with a new clutch
(cost is about 3,500++)

or

get a tranny with 23,000 miles installed with the stock clutch still in good condition
(cost is about 1,500)

the price I came up with is kind of an estimate, but I have these two very good options and can not decide. I probably will not drive my wrx as much as I did before since I have another car to drive to work. I definitely can put the extra money towards other things like brakes and rotors and that tune-up I failed to do.

All the input is apreciated. keep in mind, I have 260 atwhp and probably will not drive the car as rough or often.

If someone has done the complete rebuilt tranny, please post the total cost, meaning gear set, syncros, flywheel, clutch labor, etc.

or if someone bought a used tranny and broke it, please tell me!

You would be looking at around $3650 for a RA gearset with new synchro's/bearings and a ACT clutch and flywheel combo installed.

Personally I would go either that route or a 6sp.

okay. I have been searching through all these threads about the ra gear set.

Sounds like the special edition is the way to go.

Can someone with this set-up tell me how big of a difference it is.

I want to hear it from someone that has it. I am convinced, but not sold just yet.

Even if it is in good condition, if the original clutch has 70k on the clock, you should consider replacing it (and the throwout bearing) at the same time as the tranny to prevent pulling that thing again within the next 30k miles. I would then add that to the cost of a used stock 5MT replacement for a more realistic estimate.

If you already have the clutch out of the car, I guess you could examine the disc material for remaining use but at 70k I wouldn't expect it to go another 50,000 miles.

+1 for the RA gears. I have them in my rally car. The spacing of the gears is much more even then the stock ratios, making the acelleration up through the box much more even. After a catless up/downpipe this is my #2 favorite mod on my car.

^^Tru dat^^ First favorite mod=catless uppipe. 2nd, RA gears. I have the standard edition RA gears in my daily driver wagon and I'm glad I went with these. If you do alot of commuting, I'd go with the special edition RA gears. But if you're using your other car as a commuter, and using this as a side car, I would recommend the standard edition. The gear spacing is just awesome! At 3000rpm in fifth gear on the freeway, I'm going about 63-64mph. If you go to any of the meets I go to I can give you a ride around town and on the freeway to give you a better idea.

Or, if you can shell out alittle extra, do the 6 speed swap.

if you have the money get the RA gearset. tranny is probably the worst piece of metal slapped onto a wrx
