The smell is the start of mold inside your HVAC system.
To fix it the easy/cheap way, go get a can of Lysol. Turn on the car, and turn on the A/C.....being sure you are on the setting that lets in outside air and NOT recirculate (for the WRX, this means the lever at the bottom of the HVAC controls should be to the left).
Once it is on, spray in that ENTIRE can of Lysol along the air intake vents at the base of the windshield.
This will kill whatever mold/fungus is growing in your AC system, and the problem will go away.
To prevent it from happening again, just get in the habit of running your vent (i.e. turn off the AC) for the last 2 minutes or so before you get out of the car. This will dry out the AC ducts, and solve the problem.

The smell is moisture in the Air Conditioning System. . . .roll down the windows, turn on the vent, and then turn on the A/C and the smell should be gone. Good Luck.
