Borders?

So whats going on with Borders? I was in the one down here and there was a serious shortage of employees. The single cashier was pleading on the walkie-talkie for extra help up front because there was a line, but then he'd applogize to us customers because they were running with a "sub-skeleton crew" but thanked all of us for being there helping keep them in business. Are they going under?

Circuit city going under is one thing, but I think it's really sad to see a BOOKSTORE going under. The only good I can see coming from this is the chance for independent bookstores to reemerge when the economy turns around.

Sign of the times, I've noticed most places cutting back on staff for months now.

In quite a few branches they seem to have cut back on the upkeep (chairs in the cafe showing serious wear and tear without replacement).

I'd rather see luxury stores go under before bookstores.

I used to work at Borders in Vacaville, so maybe I have some insight.

Borders books is ran by a bunch of cheap bastards and bastardettes. They are too cheap to pay workers a decent wage... etc etc.

Anyways, when I worked there, I had that same problem all of the time. I would often ask for help over the walkie-talkie, knowing that there were some supervisors and employees in the back, and NO one would come out to help. Why? I have no ****ing clue. A lot of the supervisors were lazy, really lazy.

What you are experiencing now is the same as it was 2 years ago when I worked there. I suggest shopping at a different bookstore... I did/do. ha

Its retail. You develop a profound hatred for the general public very quickly.

Ahh, the memories. Used to also work at the one in Union Landing. I was there for almost four years, and yes I too noticed some bad management. Other than that it was a nice laid back job for the most part. I still go there to buy books so I hope they don't go out of business.

i love borders. I love the 40% off emails i get...buy a $300 trilogy of some weird book...return it and get the credit put on a gift card. 40% off one item only? not for me! lol.

I bought a book the other day at McCarthy Ranch Borders and there were 3 people working.

+1

Sometimes it's not hatred as much as it is a dreading of the general public and a loss of patience. But there is still a lot of hate.

saw on the news the other day that lots of different shops are closing up or going down to skeleton crew. They did however say lots of bookstores will be closing because of online book sites and so many books for download. People are using the cheaper route to save money in these harder times.

Print is dead. Even if you need books - Amazon.com has you covered pretty vastly.
