Bike Rack Recommendations

Any recommendations for a Yakima roof rack for a mountain bike? I already have the towers and crossbars, so I just need the part that actually holds the bike. What do you guys like?

Thanks,
David

I have 2 of the 'Viper' mounts. If you have a bike with really big forks (MTB) or with disc brakes, you'll need a Viper. Otherwise, the normal fork-mount racks work fine.

I've got two Copperhead mounts and they suite my needs quite well!

I think what I have is called a "Lockjaw" and it locks the bike in place using the downtube. It's convenient for me because it fits all different types of bikes (I've carried bmx bikes, fixies and cruisers with it), plus you don't have to take off the front wheel.

Hey Karl, I read some reviews about people saying the rear wheel doesn't seem very secure on the Copperhead. Have you experienced this? I'm leaning towards the Copperhead because of the price. Also, do you know if it works with bikes with disc-brakes?

I run vipers as well. They are on my wife's car right now. 2 of em. Dead on about the disc/big fork. I have both.

I hate HATE fork mounted. They're too tall and well I just don't like them.

If you don't want the front tires in the car get tire holders too.

I've had 2 bikes on my roof at speeds WELL... WELL over 100mph. The Viper mounts RIP.

I definitely recommend yakima. Order direct.

Won't work with disc brakes.

And you can buy ratchet straps for the rear tires. $25. Get em.

Not too sure about the Copperheads not working w/ disc-brakes, 'cause if I recall my buddy mounts his bike on a Copperhead. I'd have to check on that though. As for the rears, I have ratchet straps which doesn't "look" as secure, but I haven't had any problems with 'em.

You should check out Rack&Road in Campbell, off Camden, that's if you haven't yet. About around this time last year they had a sale on all Yakima equipment, that, and they should be able to answer any questions/concerns.

All I know is Yakima says they won't work. Didn't work for mine but I also have DC forks. Vipers work. I run the ratchets and like I said... I've had the bike up top doing WELL over a 100mph with NO issues what so ever.

Shoot enough of us have racks just go check someone's out. Toss your bike on it and see if you like the way it fits.

I highly suggest getting a wind deflector and a wire lock. Get enough locking cores up front for future use so you'll only need one key.

So if you plan on getting snow gear or whatever buy a few extras.
