Car and Driver (I believe it was them) did an article like this last year where they tested braking, acceleration and overall diameter of putting 20s on an Expedition. The stopping distance was greatly increased and acceleration decreased.
But it looked cool!!!!!

it shouldnt be a problem if u have upgraded brakes and suspension like they said.
Everyone go out and buy big brake kits and coilovers and you'll be ok...

The thing is...the WRX comes with 17s other places in the world...and the STi comes with 17 anyway...so 17s on an impreza is pretty much stock...

R&T and M/T both did articles on dubs. They only confirmed what we already knew. The reference to speeding tickets was to mean that if you get taller tires, your speedo will read low, which might cause the driver to exceed his/her intended speed. Bigger wheels and tires are not illegal. Yet. Though there are laws reguarding bumper & headlight heigths. In addtion to upgrading your suspension & brakes, you would also need to upgrade the driveline/engine to overvome the additional weight (& height of the tires).

I dunno, but in reality, there is no way for the po-pos to bust you on that....all they can do is ask: "did you get your spedo recalibrated?" and an appropriate answer would be: "why yes, officer, that was the first thing I did when I changed my rims/tires."
I know, because I have been asked this exact question before. When I got pulled over for not having mud flaps on my lifted truck......Stock came with 31's on 16" rims.......at the time I got pulled over, I had 15" rims w/36" swampers.
