Best gas?

Been using Chevron lately, but tried Shell today. Found I like the shell gas better.

Price DOES NOT bother me since I used to pay 105yen (about $1) per liter in Japan.

But I wanted to know what the more popular station is?

I use Union 76 premium exclusively, although I will use Chevron if a 76 station isn't available when I'm out of town. One local 76 station in Sacramento also carries 100 octane race gas for those occasional track days or tuning sessions.

I don't care about the price difference between 76 and the more cheaply priced competitors.

I think like %80~ of BAIC members use 76 since its a much better quality fuel and does not contain MTBE, though that is supposed to be fased out soon.

Somewhere in Monterey there should be 100 octane at the pump, I would guess close to pebble beach.

Best street gas>>>76 Proven time and time agian on the dyno.
I think they had a thread over on EVOM, where they dynoe'd some cars, that weren't up to power....turns out they were running Chevron.....later the same cars came back running 76 and were back up to 100% hp, pickin up 15 or so WHP....keep in mind that was on nicely tuned 290 WHP Mitsus, so a stock WRX may not see 15hp.

For race gas VP makes a KILLER new unleaded fuel.... i would HIGHLY suggest that.

Believe it or not, ALL of the gas comes from the same place. A number of co-workers have told me that all of the companies fill from the same stations at the refineries. The additives is where the difference is at.

Do you work for an oil company?

From my experience I have felt the degredation in performance of my car when using shell gas, or pretty much anything but 76.
There was one time where I think 76 on Saratoga & prospect (my normal station) got some funk in there 91, or they filled it with lower octane or something cause the car made funn noises just like rotten robbies or shell does. =\

I think your co-workers are telling you hear-say thats been passed on to them.

I used to work in the petrolium industry...
There are two fuel refineries in the bay area, no one brings anything in from out of town.
Every gas station in the bay area has the same stuff in their fuel storage tanks

Don't buy into the hype, gas is gas

You lie! ;P

Where are these refineries, and is one of them owned by ConocoPhillips?

Here is a list of every oil refinery in the state
http://www.energy.ca.gov/oil/refineries.html#table

Now if all the oil comes from the same pipline and all the gas comes from the same refineries, where does the product differ?

I am no chemist, but I could see the product differing in the refinement process:
http://science.howstuffworks.com/oil-refining.htm

cheaper/weaker catalysts can be used, poor quality or cheaper filtering methods that leave impuritys in the gasoline could lead to lower performance.

Just a guess thats all, until I actually hear something straight from a chemist at an oil company on what the differences are, I will be stubborn and belive that 76 has better quality fuel.

Sorry for the thread hi-jack btw.

They have different additives in them.

76 - propower
chevron - techron
shell - v-power

like marksti said...it has been dyno proven that 76 makes more power. Vishnu mentions the same thing on their website. 76 knocks less than the others, so your car's ecu will not pull timing like it will on crappy gas.

something like costco gas won't hurt your car will it? I think for a few weeks i'll be going the costco route becuase of insane raises in the prices lately.
