SOMEONE! ANYONE! THROW TOGETHER THESE PARTS TO MAKE A SYSTEM FOR ME!

My criteria are similar, and I'm thinking USDM Sti minus the 3rd cat.

1)USDM Sti uppipe will fit -- should pass visual smog and "mod- friendly" dealer might overlook.

2)downpipe cat has larger capacity to compensate for no uppipe -- better flow?

3)axle back has constant diameter pipe (2.5?) -- not necked down like WRX -- also can is bigger -- gotta flow better.

4)Prodrive's 3rd cat eliminator -- has a bracket so you can reattach the heat shield -- should pass visual -- keep stock cat for reinstall if it fails sniffer.

Uppipe is available from your friendly local dealer and the turbobacks should start showing up on here used. Don't know if the Prodrive piece will be available seperately from thier kit -- could use the Stromung -- won't retain the heatshield though.

thanks for the input everyone. Keep giving me ideas so i can make up my mind. I also tought i'd post this thread so people in my shoes could relate.

thanks again.

So far im thinking about just getting a Up-pipe. (maybe the S-Squared one) and a TurboXS cat back system. If i were to replace the up-pipe i could really get any cat back i wanted, right?

And finally, do a absolutely need a reflash with the type of set-up i mentioned? Yes, i know for more gains but will it hurt anything not to.

I was also planning to have a muffler shop make me a pipe to connect the last cat to the axle back, to make a full cat back. Shouldn't cost much at all and it will be all stainless.

Oh yeah, uppipe for sure. I'll email you about that.

thanks chris, any help is appreciated

This was actually the route I was considering going. But I've never done any exhaust mods. How many hours work would we be talking to swap everything back to stock before my next smog check?

One afternoon under the car (if that's how much time we're talking here) every 2 years would be worth it in my opinion.

Assuming you're leaving the uppipe alone, a catback swap is pretty trivial. Even a turboback swap shouldn't be too much of a hassle every so often (even if you get a fix-it ticket for illegal exhaust every year or so).

What if we're talking uppipe and downpipe also?

there's no way inspectors are going to look for the uppipe upgrade. they probably don't even know about it. As long as you have a cat on your downpipe and an exhaust w/ a muffler. you should be able to pass sniffer test.

I am using 3" MRT turboback w/ cat on the downpipe, and I painted the muffler flat black w/ bbq grill paint ..lol It sure looks stock as hell
oh it is quiet too

So if i wanted i could get An Up-pipe from S-Squared and a Turbo back exhaust with one cat on the Downpipe.

then once it's time to smog unbolt the turbo-back system from the up-pipe and throw on the whole stock unit as a whole.

It this a ture statement and is it very easy to do?

thanks again. i just want to ask as many questions as i can so i know all my options.

This is what I would do...

Get a stock uppipe and gut it (or buy on that is already gutted) make sure EVERYTHING is out. This should not cost more than $50-100. And you get the stock look. OR get the STi catless pipe.

Get a turbo back w/ a bellmouth or twindump downpipe and a cat as close to the turbo as possible. AND with twin tips. You can buy a whole system or piece it together. If there is a power difference in a whole sys vs. piecing it is very very little. MRT, M2 or TurboXS stealthback w/ a twin tip muffler for sound and less pig induced attention.

If you are that concerned about smog, then when it is time to smog. If you can't do it yourself (it really easy) then buy someone lunch or something and help this person swap exhausts. Swapping a turbo back should take a couple hours, if you have the right tools and not dealing with the heatshield.

fartcans = attention from pigs
exhaust mod w/o replace downpipe, what's the point?
