Maybe the area they are in only allows up to 2in? Or maybe that he prefers a smaller knife for ease of carry for EDC.

I lost my mini ritter a little while back and am currently without a decent EDC. After being inspired by this thread I just pulled the trigger on a benchmade 943. Almost went with the 470-1 as I somewhat prefer the smaller size, but after reading about issues with the spring assist and safety I decided to go with the slightly larger and simpler 943.
