15-year-old punches brown bear

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A 15-year-old boy on a wilderness expedition for emotionally troubled youths woke up to find a 400-pound brown bear with a bad attitude sitting at his feet.
After trying unsuccessfully to back out of the tent, the boy was bitten in the forearm and decided to fight back, punching the bear with his left hand a half-dozen times, Alaska State Trooper Adam Benson said Monday.

When the teenager tried to run, the bear bit him again below his ribs, this time leaving a half-dozen puncture wounds on his back, Benson said.

The boy punched the bear again, and again she let him go, but chased him around a nearby stand of trees. He eventually remembered an air horn in his gear, and blew it in the bear’s muzzle, waking others in the camp, said Steve Prysunka, director of the six-week “Crossing Wilderness Expeditions for Youth” program.

Prysunka asked that the boy not be identified.

The bear finally turned and ran after counselors blasted her with pepper spray and fired a flare at her feet, Prysunka said. Later Saturday, following the morning attack, officials found the sow in the campsite area on Deer Island in southeast Alaska and killed her.

The boy was flown out to a hospital, where he was treated, then sent home to Barrow to give his wounds time to heal, Prysunka said.

“I think he is the biggest, baddest thing in the woods. He punched the bear,” Prysunka said.

There was a Kauiian kid who got attacked by a great white while surfing (I *think* he was in south africa, but definitely wasn't in Kauii) and he fought back and gouged at the things eyes until it left him alone. He proceeded to paddle in before he bled to death and lived to tell the story. Both the shark story and the bear story are freaking awesome!! How many people can say they went up against a black bear/white shark trying to kill them and lived to tell the story?

Another crazy story, a kid I went to college with was camping and woke up with his head in the mouth of a large black bear. Literally. He obviously lived to tell the story, and he's got the scars on his face and scalp to prove it, pretty scary isht.

And yes emotionally troubled. I don't think anyone but someone full of anger could pull that off.

I got attacked by a dovernment or how every spell it. I ended up biting him on the face and socking him in the side a bunch of times. my friend stood there. bastard. I was damn man..I must of been like 9 or 10 at the time.

must freakin hurt to get bit in the back by a bear.

my question is how could you not wake up to the sound of a bear running around a camp site taking swings and bites at a kid that was probably yelling and cussing his brains out while showing the bear the big left hook. I mean the kid had to get an air horn for crying out loud. I think this was a camp not for trouble youth but youth with sleep deprovation. They must have just fallen asleep for the first time in a week.

speaking of which....how do we know this kid didn't wake up..get jacked and grab the air horn? Maybe he was coverning for the fact that he smuggled twinkies into the fat kids with sleep deprovation camp?
