here are the rules.

cable providers MUST provide the digital equivalent of the analog channels that you are paying for.

for example, all of the local channels we have in the SF bay area (fox 2, nbc 11, cbs 5, abc 7 and pbs 9) must be available. and for no charge

btw, ditto the standard cables too, like espn, tbs, etc.

but the trick is, you MUST have their box and PAY for the digital channels TIER to get them.

what you people have been getting before was the "free" QAM channels. comcast sends out their signal on a QAM (vs (NTSC/ATSC) format. some channels are encrypted. some not. and hence your free channels.

best thing to do?

get a cheapie antenna like the $30 pie plate/loop and rabbit ears combo i got like 7-8 years ago, when i first got my HDTV.

I still have HD channels for free .. touch wood..

NO all HDTV get the HD version of some channels you need to have a built in tuner. I have two HDTV the older one couldn't get it. If you hook up the box to your TV you will forsure not get the HD channels. The HD box is ghey. the remote is hopeless and it takes forever to punch in the channels.

I hate comcast but I am dont' want direct TV since they dont' have FREE HD ..
