BAIC Layoffs?
In 2008, who here was layed off, or had layoffs within your group?
What's your take and industry?
My group of 40+ had layoffs of 6 people, more on marketing side. I'm in semiconductors.
Sign of the economy, lax regulations on greedy big business practice and squandered trillions $$ on "war" for profiteering of the select few.

I'm a software engineer. I got laid off at the beginning of August. The company then took me back on as a contractor - which I'm still doing for them supposedly through until next April. In the layoff, they dumped about 1/4 of the company of 80 people.

Construction: remodel, new build
Been outta work/laid off for about 5 weeks now.
Most customers dont think it is a great idea to spend $50,000 on a bathroom remodel or 100,000+ on a new kitchen right now. Thats why I am outta work.
however i did put out a few applications and i have gotten some calls back. i have a little boy. i'm willin to do everything thank god for my wife. thats all i gotta say. thank God for her.

I got laid off w/ 65 other people on Monday leaving something like 25 left. We had another round a month ago or so. Problems with our product, not totally related to the economic weather.

I haven't know anyone personally that's been laid off so please post up if you have been. I'd like to get a sense of how many people are getting laid off and from which industries.
I managed a Mervyns store up here for a while, up until a few months ago.. Now, I'm sure you guys know what's goin on with them... They've already closed 26 stores. I believe they'll be closing the remainder of the stores beginning of 2009 after the holiday sales.
It is a tough economy, I have no choice but to go back to school again and pull out more loans to add to my 35K debt.

Yeah, it's unfortunate. Just yesterday, I had an older gentleman come in and ask for an application. He asked if we had "anything for an old, retired man... like a delivery driver position" open. He handed in his application, and in a quick glance, his application had a masters degree listed...and he's looking for a delivery driver position?? Times are getting lean, and we're looking very closely at who we do and don't need in our department. I sometimes concern myself, as I'm the last one hired as a front counter sales person, but hopefully there are other creative ideas which will allow us all to retain our positions.
