I need an input from outback or legacy owners maybe an 08 wrx.
where does this piece go for our cars? some posts on LGT say it is "Just put back and you're good" But otherwise I know for the GC/GD etc etc you have to remove the sundial off of the front diff to access the back of the axle seal. Any ideas to this? I reinstalled the new axle for now and so far... No leaks.
Thanks!!

Thats part of your axle seal, just go to Subaru and ask for new seals. Their only like $10 each, easy to change out also.
I wouldnt bother trying to put the spring back In there Id just replace the seal.

From what I have read the sundial needs to be taken out? But on the Legacy forums they say just put it back in (Which I take it as its on the outside section of the seal?)

From LGT
I replaced the seal with the coverplate on. I did verify with a trusted Subaru tech that you don't have to remove the coverplate to replace the seal (at least on the LGT 5MT, not all trannys are alike)
I used a screw driver and hammer to gently push one end of the seal in without damaging the coverplate. Once it started to turn I could pull it out by hand.
I then applied a little bit of assembly lube to the outside of the seal and worked it into place by hand, being careful to only push on the edge and not on the inside of the seal.
I ended up having to do the passenger side over again as the dealership sold me two drivers side seals. It's really a pretty easy job.

Believe that, that piece goes along the outter part of that "sundial" peace which you do have to unscrew to get to and then there's an actual seal (oil seal) that goes in the "sundial" which in the case of that seal you do not have to unscrew.
Maybe I can post the picture for you tomorrow at work. But I'm pretty sure that o ring seal that you have, you'll have to unscrew the sundial

Yeah thats what I've been thinking but the thing is, why would people say the seal is removable without taking the sundial out? I know our tranny's are a bit different.
Not sure, maybe theyre thinking of a different year, model, trans, etc..
What years your car?? Could double check for you.
edit: from looking at SM sundial shouldnt have to be removed for 05..removing the retainer is to set or back lash..so would indicate you do not need to remove for axle seal replacement. like lgt forums indicated, pop out with a screw driver and reinstall.
How did the spring make its way out of the seal? did you already remove the sundial?? or did you pop the seal out using the screw driver

ohhh...yea..all you need is a new axle seal. pry it out with a screw driver, like lgt forum suggested. will require you to remove the axle again.
See you found that axle seal thread on lgt =) ahah. dont have a picture of it..but def doable with a screw driver/hammer method suggested on lgt.com

sorry dont know how to take screen shots on my computer and subaru service manual is very vauge at step by step instructions -__-...so that wouldnt help either =( lol
seal is a little stubborn though to come out..but it will come out eventually..would suggest using an extension and a hammer to tap the new seal back in, if you dont have the correct seal installer.

so the sundial does not need to be removed, just take that little black piece off reinsert new one with a new spring in call it a day? The o-ring is not damaged so. I know for fact that is a job that needs the sundial to be removed.
yes you DO NOT need to remove or touch the sundial
remove axle
pry out old axle seal
install new axle seal (that round spring is located on the back side of the new axle seal, IS not two different parts. you will see when you purchase new axle seal).
again easiest way ive found to install the axle seal is with an extension and a hammer lightly tapping around the seal to firmly seat it, if you dont have a seal installer. I big socket works as well if you have one thatll fit around the axle seal.
