My biased opinion would be Apple. However, you should play with a Macbook first at an Apple store and talk to the techs there, ask questions to see if it's your thing. It's a quality machine and the OS is rock solid (Linux-based). However, as far as PC's go, Dell is pretty good. IBM's good too (doesn't look impressive on paper until you actually USE a Thinkpad).

Try a Mac. My sister got one and it is hella awesome. She got the MacBook. With student discount, you can get one for $1200 and an iPod after rebate or something.
