Nevermind, I found some other stuff that said the peak is between midnight and dawn of the 12th, so tonight, technically tomorrow.

tonight

"August 12, 2009 Perseids
And when we say August 12, we mean that morning … not that night."

A couple of years ago there was an amazing shower and some big astronomy buff friends of mine planned a big trip out to Sherman Island. It's the darkest place I've been to near the bay area, no light pollution of any kind. I saw more stars than when I was in the middle of the desert.

If anyone wants to plan a shower meet for late night here's the island:

Glad to see someone posting up about this.

Sounds like the wifey wants to go check this out.

I'm in the South Bay, so:

  • I'm debating about whether to hit up that Parking Lot on Hwy 35 (North of Page Mill, near Clouds Rest Rd...i think this is the one).
Drawback is my last experience going there for the meteor showers, a bunch of kids were smoking weed. Not the thing to bring my baby to.

Since the Perseids are supposed to be best viewed in the NE, this seems to have a pretty good view.

  • My 2nd option was to go to the parking lot on Hwy 9, just after Skyline.

Figure less people will be here, but the drawback is that it technically faces the South. So to view the NE, our view would partially be obstructed by the mountain.

Hope you don't feel this is a hijack, just wanted to get more feedback.

(do i smell stargazing meet anyone?!?!?!)

haha, I already have a thread going about having a small group of photographers meet up. We're thinking of going up towards the Lick Observatory.
