Where can I go (in the bay area) that would allow arrive and drive shifter karting?

I went to Russell at Infineon in May for their TAG kart school. It was a blast. I wanted to see if my beat-up back could handle a day of karting, and I came out in one piece. Russell provided everything. There are a couple of other places also, but I think Russell runs on the best track. Here is their site:

i know some people who do the arrive and race...they prep karts and store them at Infinion, its actually cheaper to do it that way, even in the long run.

NO racing in the winter...season's over last month. Next race? Try March or April. Although there's the enduro later this month and that's it..

You can try calling Steve Sharp, Infineon Kart Track manager @ 707.938.9889 and he can give you their winter schedule for practice and pricing. He's a good guy

btw, tracks closed on Mondays.

There are 8 races plus the 4 hour enduro at the end of the year...but just for the regular season, according to their site, they charge about $3800...so yeah, give or take a few bux its $500 per race.

In comparison...I have my own kart, paid over $10K in initial cost ($3500 motor, $4000 chassis, plus equipment, trailer, tools). Entry fee per race is $100 plus $10 for your asst pit pass (if you have one), about $25 for gas, $10 for oil (2 stroke), $200 for tires (if you want to stay competitive, new tires every race), plus $150 for new pistons and rings (top overhaul), which is optional, but very important again, if you want to stay on the top 5 of your class. So, we're out around $350 per race, without the pit crew. But since I drive a TonyKart, Jim Russell gives me pit support for free and excellent pit location.

or you can get away with maybe $4000 for a good used kart, $500 for equipment, kart stand, helmet, suit, etc...$100 entry fee, skip the top overhaul, new tires every other race ($100), $10 pit pass, $25 gas.

If you dont have a truck, you can park your kart at infineon for $100 per month storage fee.

They have a practice pass card for $400...20 sessions (they punch the card everytime you go). Right now they charge $30 per session..so it's a $200 discount.

Arrive and drive programs are always expensive. It was $425 when I went and also got a 15% SCCA discount. I went that route because I didn't know whether my back (motorcycle incident15 years ago) could take the abuse of driving karting. I didn't want to invest in a kart bafore finding out. Now that I know I can take it, I am looking to buy one.
