Apple: Hard drive recovery...

O.k.

So I took my computer in because the optical busted and the monitor was tweaking. I thought I backed everything up, just in case.

Well they ended up replacing the screen, part of the case, the hard drive and the optical drive and hooked me up with snow leopard for free.

All good, right?

NO!!!!!!

I friggin forgot to back up itunes and iphoto. No big deal on itunes 95% of it is on an external hard drive. iphoto on the other hand is a HUGE issue. My honey moon photos in there and only a few were backed up. Totally slipped my mind.

So Apple was nice enough to give me back my old hard drive. Not sure if it's destroyed or not but I need to recover it. Anyone know how I go about doing that?

Grab a SATA to USB 2.5" external enclosure and stuff that drive in there. Grab Drive Genius or data rescue and let that thing CHUGGGGG on that data for as long as it takes. (mine took 45days...seriously, and even then I didn't get 'everything' I wanted from it.)

Hope this helps. If you want... PM me and I'll help you out with any questions.

would that basically make it an external drive? I'm not much of a tech guy.

The hard drive was fine when I dropped it off. I was using it before I dropped it off. It was just running slow. So as long as they didn't wipe it out it should work enough for me to get in there and pull the files.

yup, the sata 2.5" to USB enclosure would allow you to use this as a external hard drive. The reason I said use the other stuff, is for data recovery. I assumed by your topic that the old drive was on its way to a slllloooow demise if not already gone.

Dude remember that place I called when my External crashed, they wanted $400 just to look at it without even knowing if they could fix it. I picked up one of these sata to usb adaptors and got as much as I could off it. If you get an enclosure for it, it can become an external.

Hey Ray, I just moved to boulder creek. if you want to swing by, not sure where in SC you're at, but i'm near the golf course. I can help you recover the data. I support 100+ Macs at work and have done this plenty of times for hard drive upgrades.

Let me know.

Why did they replace the HDD if it was working fine before?

Anyway, at no point in this thread does the OP say that the old drive has any physical problems. Therefore, there is no need for data recovery. All the data is just sitting there on the old drive perfectly fine and ready to be accessed. Throw it in an enclosure and transfer the data to your new internal HDD
