yes, you can burn data off the DVRs to DVD connecting it via firewire.

OR

older boxes has single tuners while newer ones has 2.

OR

no you cannot add space to the DVR by adding external HDs

OR

the 6412 has a 120 Gb HD while the 6408 has an 80. and no, i havent heard of a 64XX with a bigger HD... yet...

OR

no, the card slot isnt functional for the bay area comcast

did i get one right???? lol....

I have 2 boxes my cousin gave me from louisiana and was wondering if i could use it here and save the box rental TIA

probably not.

the boxes have a MAC (media access control) address like thing. and that has to be "registered" to the home office.

might be able to see just the analog signals.

or it might work for a while, then suddenly it will just die.

when i first got my comcast DVR, it was fine and good for a month or 2. then suddenly, no signal.

so off i go and call comcast. a day or 2 later, their guy comes by.

turns out, the "MAC" of my box wasnt in their database and i guess non registered boxes was just turned off...

neat little boxes. they can send a signal TO IT, to reboot it. kinda like a big comuter network and the admins can see all the nodes and remotely do nasty things to it...

that's what the CABLE CARD slot is supposed to be for. now that TVs are coming with the slot built-in. the theory is that you register the "MAC" of just a credit card sized thingee. you then insert that to the slot and your TV acts just like a box you rent from comcast.

but so far, it's being met with a lot of resistance... duh...
