I've had mine since last friday and it currently has 603 miles.
I haven't heard any pinging or detonation, little vibrations here and there inside the car but that's about it.
hope this helps.

So far only 241 miles and no problems at all so far. Car runs really smooth and boy I cannot wait to open her up after the break-in period.
Mine has 500 miles now and yes it pings something terrible between 4 and 5k. I not sure past that as I haven't really gotten on it too much yet. I usually use Chevron but now I think I'm exclusively going to use 76. That seems to help a little but not eliminate it.

Wow, that's pretty rediculous... off the showroom floor it pings?!
Maybe this is what happened:
"We've gotta embarrass Mitsubishi! They just announced that 270hp Evo on Friday, dammit! OK, over the weekend crank up another 2 pounds of boost in the ECU and on Monday announce 300hp!"
"Yeah, but we're starting to get detonation at higher RPMs"
"Yeah, but it'll be 30hp over Mitsubishi! We'll try to keep it quite as a warranty issue and still sell on a 300hp platform"

i've heard plenty of WRXs ping ... it sounds like an occasional pebble hitting the motor. Rat...tat-tat ... tat .....
I've been in two STIs now ... both of which pinged horribly. 4K-5K its machine gun fire. I think for a some people it might sound natural, since its a constant fast rate of ping for such a long period that you might not know what you're hearing.
I've heard each one on the the dyno too ... and its very obvious from the outside of the car. Good luck to our STI brothers.

Sorry to thread jack, but:
Do you hear this from the firewall, or outside the car like if the windows are down?
The reason I ask is because this sounds like what I hear on my WRX (ITG filter, Tanabe Catback) when I accellerate hard between 3.5-5k.
I don't hear it much when the cabin is closed, but I hear it with the windows open or slightly opened.
Thanks,
David

Do you have any mods dave? The WRX likes to ping between 3.5-5K because the VME is high in those ranges.
If you have a tuned ECU, you might want to think about getting it re-tuned.
It is a metalic sound...like sombody pourd bb's on your engine. Not usually a pattern. It is BAAAAAAAD

The only mods I have (I'm a cheap sumbiatch!) are an ITG foam panel filter, removed intake snorkle, and Tanabe Super Racing Medallion catback.
Stock ECU....never had a CEL...
I'm a n00b...what is VME?
The sound you're describing sounds like it, spot-on.
One thing I'm worried about is the airfilter:
Its leaking oil out into the air tract, and also out of the airbox, and onto the exhaust system.
The oil has probably done-in my MAF, and has caused smoke which appears to be coming from under the turbo heat shield...that scared the isht outta me until ckevin pointed out the cause....
I wonder if the oil gunking up the MAF could be causing the motor to ping in some way?
