The Silver State Classic home page.
You must have more faith in your driving than I do in mine. I'd almost want to run an engine oil cooler for the Silver State.
Good luck if you do participate in the Silver State. Keep us posted and maybe if I can get the time off I'll drive up for support.

The December 2003 issue of Car & Driver magazine features and article on this year's Silver State Classic. They entered and raced a new Pontiac GTO in the event. Enjoy!

Which event are you thinking of entering?
I'm a lifetime member- still hold the accuracy record in the 110 class, haven't been out to run one since I sold my BMW, but I could consider a run next year again, especially if there's a few of us i-clubbers going....

From the SSCC site:
The entry fees range from $295 for Touring Division to $580 for Unlimited. There is an additional $80 charge for a navigator and $175 for running the open practice session. First time participants are required to attend a qualifying session which costs an additional $175.
FAQ page.

MKM also has a series of open road events, www.openroadracing.com
you can practicaly spend the whole summer going from one 150 mph weekend to the next.
But we need 10 cars to have a team, are there 10 subie drivers in the bay area that dare run their cars at triple digits for almost an hour, for the low low price of $300 and no points on the driving record?

I would only recommend the Silver State for ppl with some endurance mods like the oil cooler, etc.

Hey dahveed, I didn't know you were an expert in open road rallying- I didn't figure you'd have any interest in such a thing since only the tube frame race cars get to run flat out for low ET, how many times have you run it?
Seriously though, unless you have a roll cage, fuel cell and all the rest of the requisite safety gear to run in the 120+MPH brackets, a stock ride should survive any of these events fine without needing "endurance" mods, but he's right if you want to go faster than that- better bring a race car- at least one modified with the realities of these events in mind.
Good tires are the one absolute requirement, they are very particular about speed rating (must be + or higher than OEM tires) load rating, tire age, and wear- if you do consider running in any of these events make sure to put a new set of Z rated rubber on shortly before hand.
There is quite a diversity in types of vehicles entered in the touring and GT classes, but when you start talking about the 150MPH speed classes and up it's pretty much dominated by detroit V8 powered machines- Corvettes, Panteras, Vipers, and converted NASCAR hand-me-downs, with the occasional Porsche or Ferrari thrown in for international flavoring.
And there are only a handful of drivers that have made it into the 200MPH club, usually in full-on race cars.
But even running in the slower target speed classes, it is a hella fun weekend.

haha i'm tired,,,,,forgot to mention safety mods, teh most important.
I wouldn't run it unless I had a full cage, teh works, safe, fire system, etc.
the real game is teh 150+ers....
remember that Red '67 Open Class Camaro?

I don't know how many times over the years that I've read about at least one competitor whose tire(s) blew out from the high running temperatures developed at those speeds over many miles. It isn't that they suffer a puncture from rocks, but often a complete tire failure from the temperature. Check the pressures carefully just before the runs. This is a huge part of safety.
