I have driven my mom's extensively. It has a lot of torque for the first 30-40mph and then it becomes slow. It's not like it's an STI or anything but it is definitely better than your average 4 banger.
I get about 46-55 mpg depending on how fast or slow I want to go. Going 80mph to LA I did about 47mpg on the way down and 45mpg on the way up.
best tank was 643 miles 57.3mpg going from pleasanton to reno to fernley to reno to fernley to reno and back. I even did a couple laps on Reno-Fernley raceway. ha ha.
good car... they're coming out with a new one next year btw.

I wonder if anyone has modified a prius for performance rather than gas milage? haha
Only mods I can find are to increase gas milage: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/100-mpg-news.htm

So would that "tuned Prius" then be considered a street racer by the popo's?

why dont people just buy TDI volkswagens? Car and Driver did an across america test, and the TDI got better MPG and sounds cool and are fun to drive! 3100 redline
I drive my moms Scion XB to SanDiego in 6 hours going avg 80 and+ in some sections and get 33MPG which is better than being stuck with an obsolete hybrid in 10 years that nobody will want to buy because there is better technology bound to be out by then. and stuck with a huge dead battery that will have to be sent somewhere to be disposed of along with all the other hybrids...at least thats what people say.
XB is fun to drive too, like an outback wagon, it can get the rear end out if you try, pretty scary though as the ASM beeps and kills the fun
thats the problem with priuses too, they pollute 1/2 as much, but some people drive them twice as much because of the money they save.

90 mph IS its top speed...it might have 300+ combined tq when driving slowly in stop and go city traffic but any other time its a pig of a car (compared to the engine size) with aerodynamics of a brick. On the highway, you will be lucky to get 37 mpg cause its electric engine is useless and the car has to rely on its anemic 1.5 Lt engine to haul this car around having only 85 tq on tap.
I had a co-worker back in Chicago who has been able to get better mileage from TDI Golf with a manual than his wife with a Prius. Guess why? Cause the she refuses (just like the rest of Prius owners) to accelerate 0-60 in like 30 seconds feathering the engine trying to go on the electric motor alone (and taking just as long to stop to recharge the batteries)...and the Golf cost him half as much as the Prius.

And the batteries are only good for 10 years and cost some ridiculous amount (>$10,000?) to replace. I cannot speak to the validity of this as I did not do a thorough follow up to the article, but it made sense to me at the time. I am all for alternative modes of transportation, but I think it still has a ways to go in its research, production and product development.
I am still a huge proponent of it not WHAT you drive, it is HOW you drive. It serves no benefit to own a hybrid car if you gonna drive it like a Formula 1 racer with a notion it will still be very economical.
Yeah, I was probably wrong about part. I guess I just got carried away ranting.

I edited that original post to reflect that.

well they mine battery stuff from Canada, ship it to Japan and ship the cars back to us is what i've heard.
soon priuses will be converted into mini FEMA trailers for our next disaster.
Car companies dont care about the environment, thats why GM killed the E car and Toyota released a temporary solution called the Prius
