Get a Mac at the Apple store. I don't think you can go wrong, but that is a little out of the price range you stated. For the price though, it is definitely worth it.

+1 for Macs, although since those are out of the price range, look at some toshibas, they are supposed to have pretty good warranties

Toshiba makes some pretty good value laptops. IBM makes a really nice laptop but I can't remember if they come in at your price range. Dell's are OK and you can usually get more for your money than with other brands with their coupons and sales.

Edit: HP is pretty good as well. Also, with almost every laptop it helps to go through and get rid of a bunch of the preloaded crap that slows it down that you won't need.

everything that you don't need... the different surveys, programs that you will never use... Run msconfig and get rid of the programs that start up when you turn on the computer. it makes boot up that much faster.

ooo i forgot about macs. Very good choice if you get a mac. to many adware and spyware, viruses, trogans etc... are mainly targeted at the windows OS since a majority of the public is using them. There are some for macs but few compared to windows. In the long run you will def have LESS trouble/problems with macs. Especially if the laptop was used for work! Macs are just much more safer IMO. though ease of use, eye friendly you would go with windows. Dell is cheap and the parts are easy to source since everybody buys a dell.
