Both these places have great facilities and treat the animals as an owner would (actually, better in some cases). We have a couple of rescue dogs from them.

Check out my friend's ABD, Tank.
Tank is such a wonderful dog; non-aggressive towards anything, mellow, etc.

Rots are great dogs if you get them young and train them. We had to put our Rotty down last year due to cancer and it was really tough.

aren't labs retrievers, too?
anyhow, there is a bay area lab rescue group:

petfinder is a good source - you can search by breed and they have most bay area shelters in their database. my sister just adopted a basset hound/pit mix from there.

I'll check the local places. We rescued a chocolate lab a couple years ago. Great dog. Some ******* left it on the side of the freeway tied up with a plate of food.
We got our dog Rufus as a puppy there and my buddy got his dog Sue there as a puppy. I'll swing by early next week if you don't find anything before then. Heading out of town tomorrow and can't get in today.

How far would you be willing to go to find the new companion?
I got my Pharaoh Hound / Black Lab mix from Special Pets Rescue up in Clear Lake. I drove a ways to find my guy because he is a Very Rare breed in the U.S. However he was DEFINITELY worth the drive.

However, depending on how far you are willing to drive that might help to let you know about other shelters as well (example shelters up in Sacramento area might be farther than you're willing to go, but maybe not in which case you could potentially get some good recommendations for up that way or generally out of the East Bay).
