Anyone with experience with sand driving? or ever been to Oceano Dunes?

I was thinking about visiting one of my friends at CalPoly SLO this week and dropping by Oceano Dunes at Pismo Beach.

What are the worst case scenarios that can happen when driving on sand?

Any tips or suggestions? I have no experience with it so any information would be helpful.

you get stuck.

and the only state approved tow service will cost around $150.

1. lower your air pressure. more tire patch the better.
2. bring another vehicle with you. the more capable the better.
3. careful with the water crossing.

worst case for me was sucking in the fine dust sand into a newly rebuilt engine...

sigh...

havent been back to pismo in years.

That water crossing can get pretty deep if you aren't careful and try to cross it when the tide is in.

Also, if you are running a Cold air intake, I would recommend getting one of those pre-filters that wraps around the filter element for added intake protection from fine dust particles.

something like this: http://www.racinglab.com/injen-hydro...re-filter.html

qft.

My friends Jetta made it, tho the sand was pretty crispy and hard packed even out in the dunes a bit.

dont expect to have ANY fun out there with your car, you will get a ticket. and sand in your ears/crack for a week at least.

only ticket i know of, is when you speed on the beach...

but once on the dunes, you can go as fast as you can, IIRC...

When are you going down there? I'll be there from the 11th - 14th. No, I'm not bringing my subaru. Yes, you will be finding sand in your car for years.

what are you bringing? I took my car to a dry lake bed once. picked up federal trespassing on protected land tickets b/c sections of it was mud and the rules are: stay out of the mud.

as for the dunes, I've been to pismo, but not in my car. we took a F250 superduty.

be careful you don't flip...it's a lot easier in the sand btw. *cough*
