Lived in Aptos/Rio Del Mar for a very long time. Did the opposite and now live in Campbell. Any areas in particular you're looking at? General rule of thumb for the area as a whole is the ocean side of the freeway = fog. It's one of the last places in the bay to burn off, whereas the mountain side of the freeway = sun. My parents got sick of the fog (lived at Hidden Beach in RDM) so they moved to the mountain side of the freeway near Cabrillo College a few years ago. Overall Aptos is a great area and if you ride mtn bikes, it's even better with Nisene Marks park right there.

Don't really have any area in particular. I just know that I want to move back to the mountains. I grew up in the Santa Cruz mountains and I'm just ready to move back up. I really like Felton because of the small town feel, but recently started looking in Aptos and started liking what I saw. The only complaint about Aptos is I noticed a lot of house are on the hill sides with lots of stairs and on stilts with no garages.
Yea there are some bad parts in capitola. But I live in a nice complex with nice neighbors. Ive worked over the hill for a number of years. Used to be bad but I work the swing shift so I dont hit any traffic what so ever.
I would much rather live in capitola for the price. Would be paying more than double to live on lawrence expressway and elko.......stink......lol.
Hearing the waves when you go to sleep is worth every bit of energy it takes to make it happen. Plus the weather and mountain biking. I dont know how I would survive outside of santa cruz county lol. Tried el dorado county, multinomah county and pajaro county and just cant do it for any more than 6 months. Lol.

#1 bad road design expansion. They need to go all the way to rio del mar with the 3 lanes......
#2 thats about the time when either people are taking lunch or going home.
Used to be waaaaay worse before the 3rd lane. I would take san jose soquel road home everyday from the summit. 45 mins to get into santa cruz from sunnyvale and then another 45 mins sitting on highway 1?! Eff that. I can walk home faster from the fish hook than driving.
9-10am going the other way is bad sometimes too. It seemed everyone was slowing down going under the new la fonda bridge. Now its just a waiting game until people get used to the 3rd lane that goes to morrissey blvd.
My commute is perfect now. I dont ever see brake lights. Leave at 130-145 get to work before 3. Leave at 11pm Home by 11:45pm. I still get a normal life except I get to sleep in

Also depending on where you work, Aptos and the surrounding area may count itself out due to the added commute time. Felton is nice, it's got the mountain feel without being Boulder Creek...or Zayante lol.
Overall, if you like the Aptos area just be patient, something will pop up.

The only thing I miss is being less than a 10-20 minute ride from Nisene, spent 25 years in Capi and the final 5 near Cabrillo. For the last 5 I've lived in Campbell. I've seen the county as a whole change, and change a lot. I've seen the good and the bad (worked Fire for 5 years for Central) and nothing wanted me to subject my wife (or myself) to driving 17 five days a week.
Santa Cruz has always been 10 years behind in terms of expansion. That was part of the charm back in the day, but now it's just f'ing annoying that they delayed for the sake of Staying Santa Cruz.
Aptos has quite a few places with garages, but yes the ratio is a bit higher with the 'walk up' style. Most places along Soquel Dr (and it's offshoots) will have garages, it's when you get a little more remote along Trout Gulch, Valencia, etc that it's less garages and more walk ups.

I grew up here and it has indeed changed in the last 20 years.
A lot more people and crime it seems....
The charm has almost disappeared until you start finding little bits of nostalgia around.
I hear about more stabbings and shootings in santa cruz county more than salinas.... it has most definately changed.
And yes exnay on the zayante/boulder/ pico. Lotd of nice stuff in felton and still semi close to it all.
Felton still has its fair share of tweakers tho. Feels like you just walked into chester, ca. Lol.

i work in the area so just ask away lol!
if you look at homes closer to the main roads most of them do have garages.its when you start looking in more into secluded areas that are on hills like what solsurfer pointed out.i would just suggest against cathedral dr/trout gulch dr/valencia rd areas due to road closures sometimes during heavy rain season.areas closer to the beach does have limited street parking/garage space as well.rio del mar/seascape area is really nice but $$$ will become an issue there
i work in the area so just ask away lol!
i work in the area so just ask away lol! It's not like he delivers mail out of the Aptos post office....

If we're talking ribs...there's a couple places near my place that have da bomb BBQ.....
