I just downloaded iTunes to check it out..
ehh..
not impressed. IMO, songs are too expensive. I know that $1 isn't a lot of money, but it sure as hell will be when you've purchased 100 songs. I'd rather have a service like iTunes (I like the interface, and the search feature works well) and pay a monthly subscription fee of like $14.95 or $19.95. Either that or have a song be $.50 or less.
I say this because I have tons of CDs that I've purchased for $10 - $13 that have 15 songs, meaning the songs are < $1.00 a pop. Plus, since I'm not buying the album of the song, I don't get the case or the cover art or any of the artist info that comes with the album, and if I want to listen in my car I have to use MY cd and MY burner + MY time.
That means each song costs a lot more than a buck. For now, I think I'll keep driving across town to the store to buy my CDs.
What do you guys think of the service?

I use the application. At first I didn't think too much of it but that search feature is very useful. My gf being an apple freak and all swears by the program and loves it. I use it as my main music app now instead of winamp but I know I won't buy anything off it.
I use the iTunes on both my Windows Desktop and my iBook. I absolutely love it. After trying iTunes on my iBook, I was waiting with baited breath for the Windows release.
As for the music store, I've only ever bought one song, and that was just to try it out. It was an exclusive track, which makes it easier to justify. And since I spend so much CD's I don't expect myself to be spending tons of money on the iTMS.

I think your missing the best feature... the ala carte buying of songs. Sure $10 for 15 songs is great, but what if I only want 1-2 songs. Not much of a bargain then.
Cover art... could care less. I rip any new CD I buy then it goes straight to the closet in a box never to be seen again. There is a good market out there for people like me. The only places I listen to music are computers, my SliMP3, and burned CDs in the Car.

I guess I like both ideas - I like purchasing entire albums because it's rare that I like two or three songs from an artist and not like the album. I also like the ability to just buy one or two songs from this album, and one or two from this to make a CD of my favorites. I'd just like them to be cheaper so that even though I have one cd with 10 or however many different aritsts, I still only paid $12 for it.
i love the application, and will never use the service. i like it because winamp would never handle my close to 4000 song library, but iTunes takes it like a champ. ionno, just enjoying it a lot more as a whole compared to winamp.

You also forgot to mention the sharing. I have 10+gigz on my main computer, and with Itunes it's easy to share them to all the computers in my house (including the laptop wirelessly for bedroom sumpthin-sumpthin!)

I think you are missing a few things.
If you buy an album on the iTunes Music Store, you pay $9.99, most likely, and get all the songs on the album, just like if you bought the CD at the store.
So your 15 song CD is only $9.99, which is cheaper than you pay($12.99) in the store.
Now your songs are just $.67 each.
By the same logic, $12 for a 15 song cd, times 100 is $1200 for 1500 songs, which you could have paid only $999 for if you had bought the albums on the Music Store at $9.99 each.
Most people like it cause you can buy that catchy new hit single without all the other crappy songs on the album thereby saving you money.
You do get the cover art from the cd when you buy the album, there are even 3rd party utils that pull down the cover art for free and display it when single tunes are playing(at least on the mac).
