anybody know about power supplies (for computers)

yes, this probably goes in a different forum, but this forum gets the most traffic (gj zoeb)
anyways, my old psu is located at the top of my case, and so i was wondering, do i need to get a psu with a fan at the back, or is it ok to get a psu with a fan on the top (even though the psu is located at the very top of the case)

basically,
do i need a psu with a fan like this (like my current psu)
http://www.rackmountnet.com/ps/tagan/tagan_sm.jpg

or can i get something like this (again, given the fact that the fan will probably be brushing up against the top of the case)
http://www.pcabusers.com/reviews/trueblue/main.jpg

links do not represent the psu's i am currently looking at, btw.

tia !

depends on if you want to cut a whole in the case or mount it upside down (most ones with fans on the top are just the opposite, the fan faces down into the case, so make sure there is an open area there or you will have to dremel it out)..

basicly buy the same as what is in there (as far as style of PSU)

That's actually not a top mounted fan, that's a bottom mounted fan. What it will do is take hot air from inside the case and blow it out through the back. You can use it, it's fine to have.

There are no fans for a PSU that have a top mounted fan, afaik.

Good luck, you can use it, just make sure it meets the minimum requirement for your CPU, e.g. max wattage. I have a 431 watt PSU, the recommended minimum for my system is 350, but since I have 6 drives, I figured it would be better to run 431. This was 5 years ago that I built this machine too, no failures at all . Good luck with yours.

I have a top mounted fan on my PSU. Dunno why it's like that, since I put it facing downwards, but it specifically said the other way...

I personally don't think it matters. More fans will just create more noise. If you want, you might consider a good 120mm case fan, and the ps with one fan, much quieter that way(or if you can go fanless, even better). Now if you don't care about noise get the one with 2 fans, but make sure that second fan on the psu is pointing down(toward CPU), otherwise it would be pointless.

rock on, thanks, you guys are mad helpful.

last question (for now, anyways)
the current psu i am looking at (which fits my dell pc well, it seems from the dimensions) is supposed to be for servers and workstations, does that mean it cannot work on regular pc's as well?

How old is your Dell? I put a new PSU in my Dimension this year... It was an Antec Truepower 430. I actually had to cut a little bit of the case to get it to fit right, but nothing major just widening the power plug hole. I also added an internal fan over the processor to get it to run a little cooler.

What are you trying to run btw?

hey long time no see steve!
i have a dimension 8300, and luckily the psu isnt one of the funky dell models with the wierd dell psus...
what did you use to cut the case with?
i want to get a 6600gt vid card, and supposedly they need at least a 300w psu (stock psu is rated at 250 watts)
i wanted to get a new heatsink and fan for the cpu, but i hear it wont fit with the stock cooling vent in place... so i might either try to mount a fan in the case somehow, either that or maybe install one of those fual fans that take up a pci slot.

I just used some metal sheers... Wire cutters will do too, or a dremel. It wasnt much that had to be modified. BTW, I do have the same case as you (8300)

As for the fan, just remove the plastic cover that goes over the heatsink. The fan I got from compusa fits right on the heatsink easily, and its quite and its significantly cooler than using that scoop thingy.

Oh, and ya I got a 6600GT and I had to do the PSU upgrade cause of it. However, I got one of the early 6600's and its fubared somewhat (on OpenGL games, there are these annoying pixeled spots every inch or so...) and i'm trying to get an AGP 6800 GT now hopefully for Xmas...

BTW, heres a pic of my case BEFORE I did the installs: http://community.webshots.com/photo/...28354944aNgYfT

Hey, I would personally give it a shot. Dell PSU are usually quality stuff, the actual power output is better than most no name psu's(rated say 300/350), my 400sc, pretty much equivalent to the 8300, probably has the same psu, I think it should be able to handle the 6600GT, although I'm not certain, I was actually considering one too, newegg's got one for $99. I've run a lot of stuff on my computer with that psu, and it was fine, I had a 9700pro aiw, a pci radeon 9250, 2 hard drives, 2 optical drives, some other PCI cards and ran simultaneously with no problem...
