any martial artists here?

hey, after researching tons of different arts, ive finally settled on JKD and supplementing with wing chun. im gonna be starting wing chun soon and then starting jkd. but i was wondering, are there any other martial artists in the BAIC? it would be cool to have an occasional sparring partner outside of class.

I took wing chun for a while...

The thing about wing chun though, is you don't spar, you do something called Chi Sao, which is very far from sparring, unless you are very good, and have a partner who is also very good.

I took Muay Thai for a year and a half. Anyone want to be my human punching bag?

P.S. Anyone get to see the last UFC fight a couple of weeks ago. Very good fights on there.

pimpwagon- i love bjj. i was actually leaning towards that, especially gracie bjj, but the thought of being kicked in the head by some dudes friends as i was breaking his arm wasnt appealing. but as for effectiveness, thats nummer eins.

hey kendall, where do u currently take wing chun?

kurlee- OF COURSE i saw the last ufc. my friends and i are HUGE ufc fiends. back when we used to backyard box all comers, me and my two friends called ourselves "the lions den" i actually want to buy one of those beanies that tito wears, but in grey. can u believe tank abott is coming back to fight! damn, the original bar fighter.

as far as sparring, not something 100%, well not all the time, i just like the idea of going thru drills and light sparring and whatnot when classes are not in session.

really the only reason i want to take wing chun tho is to supplement jeet kune do. ive always wanted to take jeet kune do and finally found a great local teacher. bruce lee (the real one ) couldnt stress enough how much wing chun helped his JKD.

Don't take JKD until you're proficient in one type of martial arts. Sure it's open style based on philosophy, but from the JKD fighters I've sparred in tournaments, the only good ones are ones with a base in another martial arts.

The reason (at least from what I can tell when reading the JKD book and thinking about it) is that people don't build the flexibility and strength for fighting. Also, people have less insight into the meaning of the philosophies because they can't see flaws in other types of martial arts.

As for martial arts, I take Buk Sing Choy Lay Fut (same school as Daios and the same place where brucelee trained.) Been doing that for 11 years as of now. The thing I like about that art is that it's adaptable. We also take techniques from other styles (esp. Muay Thai, ground fighting arts like jujitsu) because we follow a principal by a Shaolin monk that the Shaolin fighting system should be modifiable to be able to exceed current day standards. Right now I'm Davis training under my sifu's sifu (master's master), Lai Hung. This guy took out all the Muay Thai people back in the 60's. As for sparring, I'm willing to spar, but over the summer cuz I'm not in my hometown during the summer.

Yeah, you can. However, you have to be dedicated and not do this half-@$$ed. Otherwise you won't learn anything and cry that Northern Shaolin martial arts suck cuz you can't use them for fighting.

Oh yeah, my si-gung (again, master's master) doesn't take liking to slackers.

One more thing, if you think you can come to class to learn to kick my butt, better think again. =P

Forgot, classes are Monday and Thursday fom 6 to 8pm at the Silo courtyard.
