Any good Japanese food restaurants in San Jose?

I'm celebrating my birthday and was looking for a pretty good Japanese/Sushi place (Not the most expensive, but not the cheapest... Better than average of course) to celebrate with my friends. There will probably be about 10 of us and was really hoping to find a place that had private rooms where you can have privacy from the rest of the restaurant. I don't know what the private rooms are called, but they are the traditional Japanese rooms where you sit on the floor and everyone shares a table... Anyone know?

Good sushi is one of the main things we're looking for so if you know of a good place, please share the knowledge!

Thanks!

(sorry of the structure of my post is all screwed, it tends to happen when I post from this crappy *** phone)

Gochi in Cupertino. Been there once for a birthday party. A bit pricey, but it was pretty good.

They have the tables you're looking for btw. Take off your shoes, and your feet hang below at the bottom.

Or else, you can head to the place in Fremont over by Newpark, Nijo Castle. I think they do that there too. But I don't remember if the food is any good.

Chocolate Sushi, Sushi 85 are pretty good. Though I'm not sure if they're considered within San Jose, but they're close.

I'm not too sure about the private rooms but House of Genji is amazing. Similar to Benihanas but since it's your birthday your dinner will be FREE! Check it out

Our usuals for nigiri/sashimi are Kitscho (Cupertino), Cherry Sushi (santa Clara) is pretty good, I've heard good thing bout Sato also. In Fremont, Yuki Japanese Restaurant on Driscoll Rd is pretty good, dunno if they have private tables.

Gotchi has really good food, but it's more of a Japanese Tapas with a few fish dishes, but they do have the private rooms/tables you're looking for.

When you say sushi, are you looking for good sashimi/nigiri? Or rolls? Or do you prefer a place that has better non-sushi?

Unless they've changed in the past few years, the fish and rolls at Kobe were pretty bad. Sometimes their tempura seemed like it had been fried twice (maybe they were using leftovers)?

Ya I dont know. Havent been their in month, maybe closer to a year now. I rarely or almost never would get the tempura. I'd stick to the Maguro or anything Spicy tuna.
Not very brave to try other raw fishes. Tuna is about the only one I can eat raw.

I've been going to Sato Sushi for awhile now, but I think I'll try some of the other places mentioned in this thread
