any divers around mendocino area?
Im go diving around mendocino with a 7 mm wetsuit from time to time, however my friend thinks its totally uncessary. I have not personally went to dive without a wetsuit, but does any divers here think it's possible to survive in the water for about an hour with no wetsuit?? I'm not talking about deep down diving, just about 10-15 feet but with body fully submerged in 52 degrees water (if even that) for an hour (abalone diving
). Thanks
). Thanks

sorry, i wasn't clear
I'll be going in my 7mm wetsuit diving for abalone, he'll be in his swimming trunks.
the water is 52 degrees, which is about 11 degrees Celsius and avg survival is almost 2 hours! wow...maybe he can do it!

I hope you talk some sense into your friend, or have him fill out HIS Last Will and Testament.
Why do you think no one made the swim from Alcatraz?? It's less than a mile to the nearest shoreline!!

depending on a persons body wieght, regular body temperature, and amount of movement in the water. If you are just treading water, yes you will get hypothermia in that temp. water. with constant movement, keep good blood flow, and have some fat on you, you will live. I used to body surf four several hours at a time here in santa cruz where the water is like 55-60 degrees.

Tell me this is a JOKE!!
Either that, or convince your friend that his life is worth more than $200.
If I were a friend, I'd do my best to convince him NOT to take up this STUPID bet. The hospital bills and the emergency care to save his life are NOT going to stop @ $200.

he will get out before he gets any injuries. But reason he believes that the wetsuit is not necesary is because he said people swim in santa cruz, alameda beach, and sf beaches all the time, and the temp difference is only by several degrees. Poor guy just doesn't understand, i try to tell him, yet he thinks i'm lying to him. I've been diving for 4 years, and i used to have a 5-4-3 mm suit and that wasn't sufficeint so i recently upgrade to a 7mm and i can last in the water for about 2 hours before my body starts shaking. With my first wetsuit, about an hour i'd get cold and start to shake. Reason for this thread is i want to know if people has ever tried diving WITHOUT a wetsuit, i see people rock-pick all the time, but they only get their feet/lower body wet and not fully submerged.

bring stuff (maybe his girlfriend if he has one) to help hypothermia.
As long as he isn't a stupid ***, he will get out of the water before it gets too bad.
If he is an *** prepare for the worst before heading up there.
Go here to see how to treat hypothermia: http://www.hypothermia.org/hypothermia.htm
