Pretty sure (but not certain) that the regs have changed so it's supposed to visual + OBD, but that test stations are still doing tailpipe checks.

Anyway, doesn't matter if you have a high flow, low flow, or a couple of extra cats welded in just to be civic minded -- any modification to the "emissions system" is a no-no, so swapping in an alternative cat isn't technically legal. Dunno how strict different stations are on that.

Yeah i know its no modification at all but i have the cat the past two times it had passed same exact set up at two different places so i didnt think it would be a problem. I fully understand the law and i can just put my stock one back on Ii am more worried about the obd check but I just went back over the paper and it said it passed that so I basically answered my own question.

Thanks guys.

I just got smogged today, they were doing sniffer, roller, visual check on a 90s civic, but just visual and OBD on my car. I asked them why 2 different processes, and the guy said it depends on the car. My guess is that it means older vehicles are still going through regular inspection.

The visual part is the part that is ridiculous. If the car passes, the visual portion shouldn't be the cause of a failure.

Oh Yuri, trust me ... I know.

I have passed the sniffer before and failed for visual. The only reason for Visual is because of C.A.R.B. and their completely outdated rules.

"Your car passes our stupidly strict emissions rules but that part is not stock so we wont allow it." Z.E.R.O sense lol.

well when you have a 99 engine and its within 98% of MAX values and you would like to install a 2004 engine so it would run cleaner and be 10% OVER MIN values on the sniffer......ILLEGAL.....put back your older engine and pollute away !
cuz that makes way more sense
