Amazing 510 find.

Hey all, I know i have the tendency to post more about 510s than subarus - but since most of you guys also like 510s, i figure, ah, what the hell...

Anyways - I was checking the sacramento craigslist for datsuns out of sheer boredom at work, when i stumbled across this.

$1600.

An all original 1970 datsun 510 sedan. Original owner.

Okay, so the car has never left sacramento - except for one trip to tahoe apparently. Since then it sat for 10 years, untill recently. Obviously I was pooping my pants when i found out it was still available - so i did what i could to annoy the guy into selling it to me. So, now i've got myself an all original datsun 510, with only minor dings and dents and absolutely no rust. It even has the original whitewall spare in the trunk. All the plastic is ancient and crumbling, but everything else is still solid. The little 1600 purrs perfectly along, and the 4 speed transmission is forgiving, yet precise.
I'm stoked to the point of retardation. I figured maybe a few of you could share it and maybe dream of absurd swaps.

ROCK!

Ha, that would be a blast - but i think i'm going to go more road car. I know its a 4door, and most guys frown upon that, but what the hell. It wont be long till i get some minilites and head on down to ground control for some coilovers. Gonna keep it tasteful though.

Although, i think i hear the distant howl of an sr20det? OR perhaps a ca18det?.....

WOW! I had a orange 71 that was a blast. I learned alot about oversteer in that little car and wish I still had her......
If I did, there would be a SR20det with fmic and the works.

Good Luck and have fun...

We have 13x8s "banana" spoke wheels in offset 4 that would fit.

Thumbs up

Nice find and congrats !! I've seen 510's with wheels off 280Z's so that's a start for offset.
You might want to check this site too : http://dimequarterly.tierranet.com/

Keep us posted on your mods !

If 280z wheels work, they make adaptors that convert the Z-cars to a Honda offset and bolt pattern. Then anything will fit.

I had a '68 sedan, and I put those really nice 6 spoke 280Z wheels on it. They fit perfectly and looked awesome once I polished the rim part. I did need new lugnuts. For some reason, a glasspack under the passenger compartment and a flowmaster at the back sounds mean.

That's an awesome car. Maybe an L20B with a high comp head and duals or something? Sorta wondering about the irony of being excited about finding a car in such original shape then thinking about modding it like crazy. Haha.. IMHO it would be the most fun with a nice, firm suspension and a really good running N/A motor - light and simple. Put some RA-1's on it and take it to the track. My '68 was like a big go-kart. Tons of fun. The brakes were good, but not powered so I nearly put myself thru my windshield if I drove it for a while, then started driving a different car..

Ha, no kidding. Well - i thought about this a lot, and decided that if i tried to restore it back to original shape it should be absolutely perfect or else don't bother. The entire draw to these cars is their mod-a-bility. I am a sucker for pristine cars like this though, so i think all mods that i do are going to be the bolt on type, making sure to leave the car in a condition that could be restored back to original someday.
Luckily everything is already so great on the car, all the work is going to be additive - and the amount of "fixing" that needs to be done is minimal.
Right now i'm just concentrating on replacing all the hoses and tires so i can putt it around. Even that stock little 1600 pulls great, its really funny.
Oh, and thanks for that honda-wheel spacer link, thats awesome - gonna have to invest in those.
