I'm gonna buy some powertools.

So I'm looking for a recommendation for a good air compressor that's cheap, but also powerful so I can power stuff like die grinders and paint guns and impact wrenches, etc.

Also, recommendations of tool brands would be helpful.

i have the craftsmen 150 gallon 3 hp one. Got it for 149 at sears couple months back with a craftsmen prof. impact gun 1/2" driver 600 lbs torque in reverse =].

Broke the bolts that my friends gun couldn't break on two occasions. The compressor comes with air rachet and a small kit to get you started.

 

Try harbor freight - they have pretty good prices

 

look for the stand-up models. saves space on storing it...

 

So I'm looking at specs of air compressors and they have horsepower, psi, and gallon-nage.

So does the gallon rating affect how much air I've got, the psi how much power, and the hp how fast it can compress the air?

brand of tools would be craftsman for cheap but reliable and quality, if you want top of the line quality and the best tools out there, a set of snap ons will cost you a LOT OF MONEY but its the best, of course life time guarentee like the craftsman, mac tools arent bad either, but again expensive, so craftsman is ur best bet.

 

Just to clarify, only craftsmens HAND TOOLS carry a lifetime warranty. In this case, it's still the 1 year warranty on the air tools.

 

Porter Cable (Job Boss) this one I have been looking at through Home Depot. Good all around, not the cheapest though. Might pick one up this weekend.

as usual, the bigger the tank, the more air it can hold.

and bigger HP can fill up the tank much faster.

what you need is to match the air delivery for the tool you are using to the compressor

say you buy a unit that has 100 PSI at 4 CFM and 50 PSI at 9 CFM rating. then you buy a big *** I/R 400 ft/lb impact wrench that needs 100 PSI at 9 CFM, then your compressor will NOT be able to keep up. heck it may not even make the gun spin the chuck...

so if you need a specific airtool, check their air requirement and then buy the compressor that can handle it.
