I just moved to the San Jose area and I am looking for some advice on a good mechanic to help maintain my 2001 RS 2.5 and also repair some body damage.

Any advice would be great or warnings about people to avoid

Welcome to the Bay Area!

As far as non-dealer, Subaru-friendly wrenching shops go - you'll find most everyone around here would have no problems recommending any of these three: MPJ Performance (in Hayward), Gruppe-S (also in Hayward), and AutoHQ (in Redwood City).

The former two shops also sell and install aftermarket performance parts and have their own subforums here on I-club where you can ask questions/get a quote/set up an appointment/etc. Gruppe-S also does in-house dyno tuning. All three shops are typically no more than 20-30 minutes from the south bay.

For dealer required service (warranty work, etc) Carlsen Subaru in Redwood City and Santa Cruz Subaru in Santa Cruz have relatively stellar reputations around here. Stevens Creek Subaru is closest and in San Jose itself, but has been very hit or miss with members - probably mostly miss .
