It is not a rally!!!!!

But rally will probably get banned on account of this off-road race accident, it is a sad day for motorsports in the USA.

Whatever. In the last 3 years motorsports racing has made much little headway in the US IMO. Not enough thats for sure.

You can't have races off road with insane jumps and a bunch of drunk people all standing inches from the intended path of the vehicle, drinking.

when you see the video its like "duhhhhhhhhhhh and you were surprised because........."

Sorry folks but you have to use your brain in life.

All the headlines last night called it a rally- rally in the US is struggling to get recognition and support, and this may very well be its death blow- you might not know but there are 14 rally events on the west coast every year, meaning a couple hundred people have invested in preparing cars and buying the required safety equipment which they could very well never get a chance to use.
While the shortcomings in off road racing safety protocols are obvious to anyone with half a clue, the other 99% of Americans see "oh a rally car killed a bunch of people!!" victims families will no doubt file multimillion dollar lawsuits against the BLM, and guess what- no more permits,

no more rally.

end of discussion.

omg that is terrible

but ya pete is right, the fallout from this is going to be huge, The event organizers will be sued by the victims families into oblivion and theres damn sure not going to be another Cali 200, ever.

FTA

The identity of the driver has not been released, but he has not been charged with any wrongdoing. Investigators are questioning those responsible for the event to see if safety measures were taken to protect spectators.
its scary to think that the idea of actually charging the driver would have even come up, just shows what totally different attitudes we have towards personal responsibility here in the U.S.

Anyhow, still so tragic, prayers to the families

Or maybe they could not stand within inches of a vehicle flying across incredibly heinous off road terrain and jumps..........

There needs to be some type of protection, obviously???????????????

Our stupid fellow Americans have cemented that fact.

I mean I don't want to say anyone deserves to die, but they sure tried hard to risk their lives, and they prevailed.

DARWIN AWARD! Somehow 7 of you were too drunk and stupid to get out of the way after the first body went flying.

Really the bottom line is, (watch the cnn video) that **** is insanely unsafe and if people continue to spectate like that, people will continue to die all the time.

Dude would you really stand in that spot?

What the **** do you expect to happen during an offroad baja race, right by a jump none the less.

sucks people died, but saying **** like oh the sport will be damaged and GREAT now we will get safety measures. That seems pretty dumb to me, not as dumb as standing that close though. Sorry but after seeing the video I just can't feel that upset for someone willing to put their lives in eminent danger so carelessly.

It's a big party with rap music and people drinking mere feet and inches from incredibly deadly machines coming by hella fast off jumps at night.

Also the people who put this **** on deserve to be sued, being under american laws.

Attacking the driver is not cool.

also in the cnn vid you see the party atmosphere,

I don't see how they could sue, isn't their a general disclaimer when you get tix for something like that, "if you die, its not our fault"

Every racing event I have been to/seen has had a waiver to sign or it posted somewhere that racing is inheirently a dangerous sport, and its probable you could die, and I don't think they are posting that just for the drivers.

im sure they did but that little form you sign def doesnt make the organizers 100% sue-proof, especially during a disaster this big.

There is no expectation of being killed as an audience member...You cannot sign away gross negligence. That is one of the reasons there are so few skating rinks - too many injuries = nobody will insure.

yea I agree 100% with what slow04wrx is saying, it sucks that this happend but really to be spectators and stand that close to speeding, jumping, maneuvering vehicles is always dangerous and your basically not using your head.

If you drive out to the desert and park your RV by a jump- you don't sign nothing, this is not happening on a closed circuit- this has been an issue waiting to happen in off-road racing, at least with rally we make a serious effort to close access and marshal spectators.

thing is- the more likely response will not be "now we will get safety measures" but rather "now rally and off-road racing will be banned"

might have to think about a move to Mexico...
