6th gen iPod Classic LCD repair

Hey i-clubbers,

Yesterday, at some unknown point in time, I cracked (tore?) my iPod Classic's LCD screen NOT the external glass/plastic. I have no idea how it happened, but I called a local Apple store and they said that they don't repair the LCD screens for whatever reason.

I don't want to pay $250 for a new one or $170 to replace the entire thing at an Apple store. I looked online and found a few DIY repair kits, but I want to know if any of you have experience with a particular website or doing the the repair and can provide some advice.

The sites I am looking at:

http://www.repairsuniverse.com/ipod-...eneration.html

http://www.smartphonemedic.com/index...art&Itemid=195

http://www.repairsharks.com/ipod-classic-lcd.htm

*Sites I found via Google search*

I would say go into the Apple store (I know the Los Gatos one is great), and make a genius bar appointment and have them look at it.

Getting the replacement screen shouldn't be much of a hastle though. It looks like it is just a plug into the mother/logic board of the ipod. Probably just use a knife to pry the back off. It might be glued in, so you would have to have a way to make sure the new screen is attached. Also, they might void any offer/warranty if you take it apart and can't get it back together again.

I've replaced so many glass and lcd screens, go on ebay.. buy one for cheap and it comes with the tools and usually a video, if not then just youtube it. If you are replacing the glass buy the one with the circle button already on it. They connect with ribbon cords so be careful not to rip those and it is a pretty easy process. Gooduck!

iFixit.com is the only website I turn to when I need to disassemble/fix an apple product. Here is a direct link to the very thorough guide on replacing the LCD screen. They also sell all parts and required tools at affordable prices. Good luck!

http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/I...-Display/569/1

Edit: In total, the repair will run you under $75 if you use exactly what is listed and are very patient.

As I said in my post...

No, they would replace it, not repair it if anything. The worst they are going to tell you is that you would have to pay still, but they might do it for free.

Haha. They told me that they don't do those repairs. I'm living near LA right now for school... maybe I'll call another store to get a 2nd opinion.

Or they said it would be $170 to replace it.

Don't call, they are going to tell you the same cookie cutter thing. I would say just make the appt and you will have a better chance of getting it swapped. They won't do repairs though.
